Chapter 1 Learning about life Science Vocabulary Directions: Read over the vocabulary words and their definitions. Make notecards for the words, using the correct format. Each card should have your name or initials and class period. 1. worldview- the overarching narrative that a person uses to see and interpret the world. 2. Life science- the study of life 3. Creation Mandate- God’s command to Adam and Eve to fill the earth and have dominion over it. 4. Ethics- the study of applying moral principles to life. 5. Organism- a living thing 6. Cell- the smallest working unit of an organism 7. Unicellular- made up of one cell 8. Multicellular- made up of two or more cells 9. Homeostasis- an organism’s ability to keep its internal processes stable 10. Data- information that people collect 11. Qualitative Data- data communicated using words and descriptions 12. Quantitative data- data communicated using numbers. 13. theory- an idea that scientists use to explain the data that they have collected 14. law- an idea that scientists use to describe what they observe 15. model- a simplified explanation, description, or representation of the world. 16. scientific inquiry- using a variety of tools and skills to answer a question or solve a problem 17. controlled experiment- a way for a scientist to test the way he thinks something works by examining the effect of one factor at a time. 18. Variables- factors that change 19. Independent variable- the variable that scientist changes 20. Dependent variable- variables that are changed in the experiment 21. Hypothesis- an explanation based on limited observations 22. Control Group- the group in a controlled experiment that is not exposed to the independent variable 23. Experimental group- the group in a controlled experiment that is exposed to the independent variable 24. taxonomy- the science of sorting organisms into groups 25. Nucleus- dense part of the cell that contains the information it needs to carry out cell processes. 26. Eukaryotic Cell- cells with a nucleus 27. Prokaryotic Cell- cells with no nucleus 28. autotroph- an organism that makes its food using energy from its environment. 29. heterotroph- an organism that gets its energy by eating other organisms. 30. scientific name- describes an organism's uniqueness.
