WHAT ARE THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WHICH ARE GIVEN TO THE CONFIRMED? 1. WISDOM – help us to see the world in its true light and the value more the things of heaven. 2. UNDERSTANDING – helps us to grasp better the truths of our Catholic faith. 3. COUNSEL – help us see and pick what is most for God’s glory and best for our salvation. 4.KNOWLEDGE – points out to us the path to follow and dangers to avoid. 5. FORTITUDE – gives us courage and strength to combat obstacles and difficulties. 6. PIETY – helps us to embrace all that is part of God’s service. 7. FEAR OF THE LORD – helps us understand that to offend God is the greatest of all evils. Who may receive Confirmation? Every baptized person may and should receive the Sacrament of Confirmation In Catholic Church, when is Confirmation normally received? Received after a person reaches the age of reason. According to the Catechism, no. 1309, what should be the focus of catechesis for Confirmation? It should focus on the confirmand: - intimate union with Christ; - a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit; - a sense of belonging to the Church, at both the universal and local level; - and an understanding of a mature Christian’s responsibilities. What is the purpose of the light slap on the cheek in the extraordinary form of the Rite of Confirmation? - It reminds the recipient that the service of Christ is difficult and can even be dangerous, and so he or she needs strength. What does it mean to be a soldier of Christ? - It means to seek strength through grace, to share and teach the Catholic Faith, and to be willing to suffer for the sake of Jesus Christ. What is the meaning of being sealed by the Holy Spirit? INTRODUCTORY RITES - Celebrate confirmation within a mass Purpose: to stress the relationship among the sacraments of initiation After the reading of the Gospel, the candidates are called to the sanctuary of the church. After the homily, the candidates and those present renew their baptismal vow. C. LAYING ON OF HANDS - the bishop invokes the Holy Spirit. -the candidate kneels before the Bishop -the sponsor places his hand on the candidate’s shoulder D. ANOINTING WITH CHRISM 1. The candidate kneels before the bishop The bishop: - moistens his thumb with the oil of chrism - makes the sign of the cross on the candidates forehead. -The sign of the cross that the bishop traces on the candidate’s forehead symbolizes the completion of the baptism of the one confirmed is a reminder that the candidate is to assume a responsible, mature role in the Christian community. ANOINTING WITH HOLY CHRISM  signifies that we are called to share in Jesus’ mission as a prophet The anointing and bishop’s words: “I confer the indelible seal of the Lord and bestow the gifts of the Holy Spirit”.
