RUBRICS “THE HEART OF ASSESSMENT” A GUIDE LISTING SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR GRADING OR SCORING ACADEMIC PAPER, PROJECTS, OR TEST. A SCORING TOOL THAT LIST THE CRITERIA OR “WHAT COUNTS” FOR A PIECE OF WORK. A RUBRIC IS AN EVALUATION TOOL THAT DESCRIBES QUALITY OF WORK ON A GAMUT (RANGE) FROM EXCELLENT TO POOR. A SCORING RUBRIC IS AN ATTEMPT TO COMMUNICATE EXPECTATIONS OR QUALITY AROUND A TASKS. STEPS TO DESIGN RUBRIC o Identify learning goal o Choose outcomes that may be measured with a rubric o Develop or adapt an existing rubric o Share it with students o Asses / Grade o Analyze and Report Results TERMS TO BE USED Needs Improvement….. Exemplary Satisfactory… Beginning… Satisfactory… Developing…. Good… Accomplished… Exemplary Needs work…. Excellent Numeric scale ranging from 1 to 5 TYPES OF RUBRICS ANALYTICAL RUBRIC HOLISTIC RUBRIC ANALYTICAL RUBRIC  Each criterion( dimensions, traits) is evaluated separately  Design to assess students’ work based on specified criteria and different degrees of quality of the assessment. ADVANTAGES of ANALYTICAL  PROVIDE USEFUL FEEDBACK ON AREAS OF STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS.  CRITERION CAN BE WEIGHTED TO REFLECT THE RELATIVE PERFORMANCE OF EACH DIMENSION. DISADVANTAGES OF ANALYTICAL Takes more time to create and use than a holistic rubric Unless each point for each criterion is well defined raters may not arrive at the same score. TYPES OF RUBRICS ANALYTICAL RUBRIC HOLISTIC RUBRIC HOLISTIC RUBRIC All criteria (dimensions, traits) are evaluated simultaneously tend to be used when a quick or gross judgment need to be made. ADVANTAGES of HOLISTIC  Emphasis on what the learner is able to demonstrate, rather than what he/she cannot do.  Saves time by minimizing the number of decisions raters make.  Can be applied consistently by trained raters increasing reliability. DISADVANTAGES OF HOLISTIC  Does not provide specific feedback for improvement  When student work is at varying levels spanning the criteria points it can be difficult to select the single best description Criteria cannot be weighted. ADVANTAGES OF RUBRICS For teachers  Allow evaluation and assessment to be more objective and consistent.  Help focus to clarify his/her criteria in specific terms.  Provide useful feedback regarding the effectiveness of the instruction.  Provide benchmarks against which to measure and document progress. For students  Help them define “quality”.  Promote student awareness of about the criteria to use in assessing peer performance.  Help student to judge and revise their own work before handing their assessment.  Clearly show student how their work will be evaluated and what is expected. A rubric is a coherent set of criteria for students’ work that includes description of levels of performance quality on the criteria. The main purpose of rubrics is to assess performance made evident in processes and products. The objective test can be scored by simply counting the correct answers, but the essay test, student’s products and performances cannot be scored the way objective test are scored. Rubrics have two major parts: coherent set of criteria and description of levels of performance. Prepare 1 whole sheet of paper.
