**Lesson 1: Divine Revelation** **Divine Revelation -** refers to *how God* or a higher power *reveals divine truth, knowledge, or will to humanity*. ***The Joyful Mysteries*** 1. **Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38)** - Mary is visited by the angel Gabriel who announces that she has been chosen to be the mother of Jesus. 2. **Visitation (Luke 1:39-56) -** Mary visits her relative Elizabeth, who is also pregnant with John the Baptist, and they rejoice together. 3. **Birth of Jesus (Luke 2:1-20**) - Mary gives birth to Jesus in Bethlehem, and he is laid in a manger 4. **Presentation of Jesus (Luke 2:22-38)** - Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the temple, where they encounter Simeon and Anna who recognize Jesus as the Messiah. 5. **Finding Jesus at the Temple (Luke 2:41-52)** - Mary and Joseph find Jesus in the temple after He had been missing for three days and was seen discussing this with the teachers. 6. **Flight to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)** - Mary, Joseph, and Jesus flee to Egypt to escape King Herod\'s order to kill all male infants. D to joyful **Role of Mary** - The greatest role of Mary in her virginal conception of Jesus is that she willingly and obediently accepted God\'s plan for her to become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. **Annunciation** - Angel Gabriel visited Mary and informed her that she would conceive a child by the power of the Holy Spirit. - \"Let it be done to me according to your word,\" **(Luke 1:38)** is seen as an act of complete trust and surrender to God\'s will. - By accepting her role as the mother of Jesus, ***Mary played a crucial part in God\'s plan for the salvation of humanity.*** **Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)** teaches us that Mary\'s virginal conception of Jesus is a sign of her faith and purity. - \"Mary is truly \'Mother of God\' since she is the mother of the eternal Son of God made man, who is God himself **(CCC 509)**." **Importance of understanding the nature of Jesus and His mission** - It is crucial for understanding Jesus\' divine and human nature, the fulfillment of prophecy, the divine origin and purpose of His mission, and the theological implications of His sinlessness. ***Incarnation*** - Mystery of the word that becomes flesh. ***Hypostatic Union*** - \"the Mystery of the wonderful union of divine and human natures in the one person of the Word **(CCC 484)**.\" By becoming man, He visited us and invited us to the kingdom of God. He did not merely sympathize with our sorrows and pains, but he bore our sufferings to show us the ***face of God***. ***Misericordiae Vultus*** - The Face of Mercy - **Pope Francis\' Bull of Indiction** (formal announcement or proclamation) of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015. - ***Misericordiae*** - Mercy or Compassion, (Latin) ***Voltus/Vultus*** = Face or Expression **Christmas** - Celebration of God's Love, God sent his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. **Third Joyful Mystery** - We recall when God sent Jesus to us. It is assurance that the promised of God to bring Salvation for us is fulfilled. **St. John the Baptist** - Before the Great incarnation, God prepared for it. He announces Him through the mouth of St. John the Baptist, the ***Lord\'s immediate precursor or forerunner***. - "*The one sent to prepare the Lord's way* **(CCC 522-523)**." **Lesson 2: Jesus is our Saviour** **Nicene Creed** - more specific than the Apostles Creed in professing the Truth, that Jesus Christ, the eternal begotten of the Father came down from heaven. ***Proper nos et propter nostram salutem*** - for us and for our salvation - We profess Jesus as the only begotten Son of God who is the Word made flesh. - He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. - He lived on Earth to preach about the Kingdom of God. - He was crucified, died, and was buried when ***Pontius Pilate*** was the ***Prefect of the Roman province of Judea***. - During the annunciation, The angel told Mary to give her son the name, "**Jesus**" (cf. Lk 1:31). **Luke 1:31-33** - "You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end." *Jesus* came from the **Hebrew** name **Yeshua** which means **"God saves"** or **"God delivers"** - His name indicates His mission to deliver all people from the slavery of sin and death - Also signifies His mission to **save humanity** - The savior whose coming was announced by the **Prophets** of the **Old Testament** - **Jesus fulfills the prophecy of the Messiah in Isaiah 61:1-3, which speaks of an anointed one bringing good news to the poor** ***Significance of Christ*** "**Christ**" is derived from the **Greek word *Christos***, which translates to "**the Anointed One**." ***In Jewish Tradition*** - the **Messiah** is anticipated as a **leader** who delivers the people from: **oppression, restores the kingdom, and fulfills God's promises to Israel**. ***Examples of Jesus' Humility*** - **Washing the Disciples's Feet (John 13:1-17)** - *Humility and Service* - **His Birth in a Manger (Luke 2:7)** - *Humble beginnings, simplicity and vulnerability* - **Matthew 23:11-12** - "The greatest among you will be your servant, reinforcing the idea that humility is essential in the Kingdom of God. **[KEY POINTS]** 1. **[Jesus]** - came from the *Hebrew* word **Yeshua** which means **God saves or delivers** 2. **[Christ]** came from the *Greek* word **Christos** which means the **Anointed one** 3. **[Imago Dei]** - Image and Likeness 4. **[Fiat]** - Mary's Yes 5. **[Messiah]** - the Anointed one 6. **[Emmanuel]** - God is with us 7. **[Conversion]** - turning back to God 8. **[Holy Spirit]** - principal agent of evangelization 9. **[Isaiah]** is the **Prince of the Prophets** 10. **[St. John the Baptist]** is called the **Hera ld or the forerunner.** 11. **[Incarnation]** refers to the **mystery of the word becoming flesh** 12. **[Hypostatic union]** is a doctrine that teaches us the **mystery of the wonderful union of divine and human nature in the one person of the Word** - CCC 484 13. **[Misericordiae Vultus]** - The Face of Mercy 14.
