Router Bits HSS router bits were the standard when routers were introduced o In the last decades the price of carbide has dropped and routers have become more popular which means that carbide tipped router bits are now the norm Router bit parts o Shank – fits into collet o Curvature – not all bits have it o Carbide cutting wing o Ball bearing pilot – not all bits have this – some have square pilots o Allen screw – see above You want as much of the shank in the collet without bottoming out o DON’T place any of the curvature inside the collet  The bit will not be secure are the collet will only grab the curvature and not the shank The bit can be eject from the tool Cutting edges are known as flutes o Most have 2 flutes o Some smaller straight bits have a single flute o Some larger bits will have 3 or 4 flutes ¼” and ½” shank size are most common Bearings can be on the top, bottom or both ends Joinery bits included o Dovetail bits o Rebating bits o Slotting wing cutter  Usually 3 flutes  Used for grooves, installing T-moulding or splines o Lock mitre bit  Single bit used to create both halves of a mitre joint o Glue joint bit  Eliminates creep when laminating panels o Finger joint bit  For gluing boards end to end o Cope and stick  Matched sets  Also known as rail and stile cutters  For 5 piece door frames Flush trim bits are used for laminate work o Not designed to be sharpened Up-cut spiral – pulls chips up Down-cut spiral – pulls chips down Compression cutter – does both
