# Roald Dahl, Dip in the Pool ## Biographical Notes Roald Dahl, British short story and screen writer, was born in South Wales, although his parents were Norwegians. After taking part in an expedition to explore the interior of Newfoundland, he worked for Shell in East Africa in the 1930s. When World War II broke out, he became a fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) and was severely wounded in the Lybian desert. In 1942, by now Assistant Air Attaché to the British Embassy in Washington, he began writing stories on his most exciting war experiences, first published in American magazines. In 1945 these were reprinted in his first book, *Over to You* (including titles like *Yesterday Was Beautiful*, *Only This*, and *Someone Like You*). In 1953 his second book of short stories was published: *Someone Like You*, from which comes the humorous story *Dip in the Pool*. His best known book of stories is probably *Kiss Kiss* (1959) in which he shows a taste for slightly "sick" humour (e.g. *The Landlady*, which has macabre traits). Dahl also wrote a number of screenplays, including the James Bond film *You Only Live Twice* (1967). He died in 1990. ## I. 1. Vocabulary
