🦠 Respiratory viruses Module Microbiology Date @November 28, 2024 Lecturer Dr. Claire Crossan Week Week 10 Overview Describe commonly encountered respiratory disease syndromes and the viruses Treatment options for selective viral infections Laboratory diagnosis Its a viral infection Acute respiratory viruses most common cause of illness in otherwise healthy adults and children Young children 5 to 9 respiratory infections per year WHO state 4.5 million children 60 serotypes are known classified into 7 subgenera: A to G Croup Peak age 2 years (range 3 months to 3 years) Prodrome Fever, rhinorrhoea, cough, sore throat Nonproductive harsh seal-like cough Inspiratory stridor Tachypnoea Subglottic obstruction Treatment is supportive Complications - intubation Parainfluenza viruses 1-4 Respiratory viruses 9 Parainfluenza virus neg ssRNA virus Paramyxovirus enveloped, pleomorphic morphology 5 serotypes: 1, 2, 3, 4a and 4b No common group antigen Closely related to Mumps virus Respiratory viruses 10 Bronchiolitis Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) Incubation period 3 to 5 days Inflammation and narrowing of small airways Attaches to the airway epithelial cells (AECs) AECs are shed, mucous production and oedema Respiratory viruses 11 RSV is also a paramyxovirus RSV in young children ≥30,000 hospital admissions in UK between October to March in under 5s 2-6% under 1s will require PICU Low-grade fever, wheezing, increased respiratory effort (chest wall retraction, tachypnoea, nasal flare), reduced oral intake Apnoea in 65 years Children
