Definition of respect  Definition of respect is different for everyone  Acknowledging the value and uniqueness of others and being mindful of their feelings, while at the same time trying to put yourself in their position  Due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others  Respect means accepting the differences (cultural, religious and ideological) of others and valuing people for what they are  The act of honouring, appreciating and considering a person or thing  A feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements The word respect  Respect comes from the Latin word respectus  Re means back  Specere means look at  All coming down to how you “ look back at” yourself and others Types of respect  Self respect  Respect for others  Respect for social norms  Respect for nature  Respect for values  Respect for culture  Respect for patriotic symbols  Respect for human life  Respect for law Self respect  It refers to the act of valuing and appreciating oneself  How you look back at yourself  Values  Self worth Check points when measuring self respect  Am I reaching my full potential?  Am I living my life as I should?  Am I pleased with the choices I made?  Am I caring for my health?  Am I nourishing my intellect?  Am I where I want to be on my spiritual journey? She is convinced that she is correct and doesn’t take her younger siblings’ comments. Her mom who was listening to the conversation stepped in and made Hope aware that she was wrong and her younger siblings were correct. After the conversation, Hope’s mom realized there were a lot of papers in the yard and called Hope to pick them up. Hope took time to attend to her mom, and later said her younger siblings were the ones who littered and they must clear the mess. Respect in relationships  Love and respect should always be coupled  How to maintain respect in relationships:  Acknowledge what makes your partner special  Brag about your partner  Compliment your partner  Don’t promise what you can’t deliver  Share the load and your day  Listen to and respect your partner’s views  Most of this tips are applicable to friendships as well  Respect is the grease that helps society move smoothly, relationships are the glue that holds it together Respect for social norms  Following the set of rules that govern the actions of human beings within society  Examples:  Respect the rules of courtesy  Respect the work schedule  Have respect for the belongings of others  Respect the rules of the good speaker and the good listener (listen carefully and wait the turn to be able to speak)  Respect the opinions of co-workers, classmates, among others Respect for nature  Refers to the value and appreciation of the environment (plants, animals, rivers, among others)  Way to respect nature:  Do not throw trash in parks, rivers, forests, mountains and others  Avoid cutting leaves from plants and trees  Do not harm animals (insects, reptiles and birds)  Do not waste water, turn off the faucet (or jet) when not in use  Avoid creating fires in forests, jungles and so on Respect for nature  Recycle  Use means of transport that do not harm the environment (bicycles, ecological cars, among others)  Plant trees and shrubs Respect for values  Respect for values is important in society because they govern norms  Norms include respect, honesty, truth telling, and promise keeping  Respect for values make people to live in harmony  Respect for values implies acting in accordance with them. For example:  Respect for sincerity means honouring the value of sincerity, understanding that it is necessary to tell the truth even if it is difficult Respect for culture  Culture represents the beliefs and activities shared by members of a community  Culture varies from one society to another  Aspect to consider in order to respect the culture of others:  Avoid imposing beliefs on others  Know about other cultures  Avoid judgments and opinions about other cultures  Participate in cultural activities  Ask about beliefs and traditions The importance of respecting culture  It allows for cultural diversity and promotes understanding and tolerance among different groups of people  It recognizes the value and worth of each culture and acknowledges that there is no one "right" way to live or think  We can learn from the unique perspectives and traditions, which can enrich our own lives and broaden our horizons  Helps to create a more inclusive and harmonious society, where everyone feels valued and accepted  It also helps to prevent cultural extinction and preserve the cultural heritage of different communities Respect for patriotic symbols  To value and appreciate the symbols that represent a nation  Patriotic symbols includes the flag, the national anthem, and coat of arms  Way to respect patriotic symbols:  By stopping when you hear the national anthem  Stop when the flag is raised or lowered Respect for human life and law  Every human has a right to life.
