Rabeb Nouiri LU Fall 2024 Language & Communication Focal Points Definition of Reading Types of Reading Active reading strategies & Methods Barriers to Effective Reading Answer When we read there is an interaction between the text and the reader which is a shaped by the reader’s past knowledge, experiences etc. What is Reading? The reader must be able to translate the written words into a meaningful language Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to have meaning The reading process requires continuous practice, development and improvement Definition Reading is an interactive process between the reader and the text, in which readers use their knowledge to build, create and construct meaning. It is an acquired skill. Reading Strategies 1.Predicting: using knowledge of the subject to make predictions about content using knowledge of the text 2-Visualizing (Creating Mental Images ): involves the ability of readers to make mental images of the text 3.Connecting: clues that readers can use to “read between the lines” by linking information in the text with what they know Active Reading Strategies 4-Questioning: involves readers asking themselves questions throughout the reading to better identify main ideas & summarize information 5-Clarifying: involves using a dictionary, summary and paraphrase to decode the message in the text 6.Evaluating: forming an opinion & making a judgement on the text Active Reading Methods 1-Mind Mapping Mind maps are diagrams used to visualize information to better understand what you read As you read, write symbols in the 2- margin (? ! ) to show your Annotation response Look at important vocabulary by writing simple definitions in the margin. Don’t look up every word Write questions you have about the information that you can go back to Write comments evaluating the information. 3- The SQ3R Method 4-The Cornell Method As you read, take notes in the Note-Taking Area. After taking notes and organizing, After reading, write a brief (4-5 organize your sentence) notes by main idea summary of what and questions you read in the using the Cue Summary section Column Barriers to Effective Reading 1-Environmental Barriers: external distractions like background noise, or activities going on outside 2-Learning Disorders: usually relate to a particular dysfunction of the brain like: Reading disability : learning disorder that involves difficulty decoding words, it affects areas of the brain that process language. 3-Motivational barriers: lack of motivation “Research shows that students who read before class and who took good notes while reading and during class had higher Conclusion levels of success than students who did not.” (Harrington, 2016) Reading in a Digital Age THE END
