# Quality Assurance in Health Care ## May University in Cairo, Faculty of Physical Therapy **Dr. Ayat Gamal El-Din Saied** Lecturer at Department of Neuromuscular disorders and its surgery. ## Objectives: 1. Know the Concept of Quality 2. Define Quality of Health Care 3. Know if Quality can be measured ## What is Quality? * **Quality** is how good something is. * This may be a **service **(e.g., canteen service) or a **product** (e.g., wrist watch). * A person's **judgment** about a service or product **depends** on what he **expects** of it or from it. ## Defining Quality * Different words are used to explain quality. **Quality** could be defined as the extent to which a product or service satisfies a person or a **group**, i.e., how much satisfaction the person gets from the service. * **Quality of health care** is: **Doing the right things** (what) to the **right people** (to whom) at the **right time** (when) and **doing things right the first time**. ## Quality of Health Care * **Quality of health care** is: How much the **increase** in healthy lives by the available health services and **linking them** with a well-detailed data base and how to **measure health care**; to get further more **enhancement health care services**. ## Defining Quality There are five different approaches to defining quality: 1. **The exceptional** (exceeding high standards and passing a required standard). 2. **The consistency** (exhibited through “**zero defects**” and “**getting right the first time**”, making quality a culture). 3. **The fitness for purpose** (meaning the product or service meets the stated purpose, customer specifications and satisfaction). 4. **The value for money** (through efficiency and effectiveness). 5. **The qualitative change** (transformative). ## Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Quality Management **Difference between quality control, quality assurance, and quality management** * **Quality Control** refers to the processes and activities that are put in place to ensure that a product or service meets the **specified quality standards**. Quality control **focuses on identifying and addressing quality issues** at the individual product or service level. This can include activities such as inspecting products for defects, testing products to ensure that they meet performance standards, and implementing processes to **prevent quality issues from occurring**. * **Quality Assurance** refers to the processes and activities that are put in place to **ensure that a company's overall quality management system is effective and consistent**. Quality assurance **focuses on the entire quality management system**, rather than on individual products or services. This can include activities such as **developing and implementing quality standards, conducting quality audits, and analyzing quality data to identify trends and patterns.** * **Quality Management** refers to the overall approach that an organization takes to **managing and improving the quality of** its products or services. **Quality management involves establishing quality standards, implementing processes and systems to ensure that these standards are met, and continuously improving the quality management system.** **Quality management encompasses both quality control and quality assurance**, as well as other activities such as training employees, engaging with customers, and setting quality goals and objectives. ## Total Quality Management A diagram shows Total Quality Management at the top with an upward arrow connecting to Quality Assurance. An upward arrow connects Quality Assurance to Quality Control. An upward arrow connects Quality Control to Inspection. The diagram also shows two smaller squares labeled Inspection. A second diagram shows TQM (Total Quality Management) followed by an upward arrow connecting to Continuous Improvement, Empowering People, Caring for People, Involvement, and Compliance to Specs. ## Could Quality be measured?? * **Quality cannot be measured** absolutely but can be measured by elements. A diagram shows a hand holding a ruler over the word "QUALITY" written on a blackboard. * **He does not have any elements of infection control**:: it is a part of quality. An image shows a hospital room with multiple beds. A second image shows a dental chair in a small room with a sink and lamp. A third image shows a hospital room with a puddle of water on the floor. A fourth image shows a hospital room with multiple beds, containing patients and staff. * **No, there is no absolute measure of quality** (there are no “quals”, “kiloquals” or even "microquals" that can be counted). But that does **not mean that quality cannot be measured**. A diagram shows a scale with two bowls. One bowl is labeled QUALITY, the other QUANTITY. ## Summary Let's do it together. ## Let's practice * Quality can’t be measured. True, **False** * Understanding the differences between quality control and assurance concepts is crucial for any organization. **True**, False * Consistency mean exhibited through “zero defects” and “getting right the first time”. **True,** False * Quality assurance focus on the entire quality management system, rather than on individual products or services. **True,** False ## Thank you 😊
