During this time, the Christian Church influenced Europe’s culture and political affairs. THE GREGORIAN CHANTS It is the central tradition of western plainchant, a form of monophonic. THE GREGORIAN CHANTS The Roman Catholic church tried to standardize the Mass and chant by combining the Gallican and Roman regional liturgies. WHO WROTE THE GREGORIAN CHANT? Pope Gregory the Great. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GREGORIAN CHANTS Monophonic- consisting of single musical line, without accompaniment. Free meter- is NO regular repeating rhythm. Usually based on Latin liturgy Use of Neume notation. Neume – is the early form of musical notation during the Medieval Period. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOY BAND? Most of these songs were performed across Europe by groups of musicians called TROUBADOURS. FAMOUS COMPOSER OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD Adam de la Halle France (1237-1288) Adam de la Halle -was also known as Adam de la Bossu(Adam Hunchback) -was one of the oldest secular composers who literaly and musical works include chansons and poetic debates. -He was a trouvere, poet, and musician. La Chanson du roi de Dicile MUSIC OF THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD (1400-1600) the term “Renaissance” comes from the word “renaitre” which means REBIRTH, REVIVAL and REDISCOVERY. music became popular as entertainment and activity for amateurs and the educated. “Golden Age” of a capella choral music Lute was the prominent instrument of the renaissance era. LUTE MUSIC OF THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD (1400-1600) During period did the authority and influence of the church become less powerful and place great emphasis on the welfare and accomplishment of the people headed by philosophical and intellectual movements. SACRED MUSIC All sacred music was in Latin language and sung as a cappella. There were two types of sacred music prominent during this period – the MOTET and the MASS. MOTET – is a polyphonic music is mostly sacred but not liturgical. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RENAISSANCE MUSIC Mostly polyphonic Imitation among the voices is common Use of word painting in texts and music. VOCAL MUSIC OF THE RENAISSANCE 1. MASS- is a form of sacred musical composition that sets texts of the Eucharistic liturgy into music. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MASS Polyphonic –Musical texture characterized by multiple independent melody lines being played simultaneously. May be sung a capella or with orchestral accompaniment. Text may be syllabic (one note set to each syllable) neumatic (a few notes set to one syllable), or melismatic (many notes to one syllable) FIVE MAIN SECTIONS OF MASS KYRIE (Lord Have Mercy) the only Greek GLORIA (Glory to God in the Highest) Credo (I Believe in One God) Sanctus and Bendictus (Holy, holy and Blessed is He) Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) 2. Invention of compass Martin Luther’s Protestant reformation FAMOUS COMPOSERS OF THE RENAISSANCE PERIOD Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Rome 1525- February 2, 1594 Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina -The greatest master of Roman Catholic Church during the Renaissance Period. - majority of his compositions are sacred. - he was an organist and choir master - his first book, Masses became popular His works include: 1. Gloria 2. Kyrie Thomas Morley England 1557- 1602 Thomas Morley -singer in a local cathedral from his boyhood, and became master of choristers in 1583. - was the most famous composer of secular music in his time. - most of his madrigals are light and easy to sing with some aspects of Italian style. - his Musica Transalpina, a collections of madrigals and made significant contribution to the history of music. HIS WORKS INCLUDE: Fire fire my Heart Sing and Chant it Fantasie April is a Mistress’ Face It was a Lover and His Lass MUSIC OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD 1685-1750 The word Baroque is derived from the Portuguese word “barroco” which means “pearl of irregular shape” During this time, the arts highlighted grandiose and elaborate ornamentation. CHARACTERISTICS OF BAROQUE MUSIC Melodies sound elaborate and ornamental Melodies are not easy to sing or remember Primarily contrapuntal textures with some homophony Dynamic contrast- alternation between loud and soft CHARACTERISTICS OF BAROQUE MUSIC Music genres- operas, oratorios, suites, toccatas, concerto grosso, fugue Orchestra consists of strings. Harpsichord and organ are the keyboard instruments that are commonly used. HARPSICHORD Harpsichord (Italian cembalo; French clavecin), stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are plucked to produce sound. It was developed in Europe in the 14th or 15th century and was widely used from the 16th to the early 19th century, when it was superseded by the piano. MUSIC GENRES OF BAROQUE MUSIC 1. CONCERTO – a form of orchestral music that employs solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra. 2. CONCERTO GROSSO- a form of orchestral music wherein the music is between a small group of solo instruments called concertino and the whole orchestra called tutti. MUSIC GENRES OF BAROQUE MUSIC 3. FUGUE A contrapuntal piece, developed mainly by imitative counterpoint It is usually written in 3 or 4 parts, with a main theme called “subject” The entire piece grows mainly from a single brief strong musical character. MUSIC GENRES OF BAROQUE MUSIC 4. ORATORIO A large scale musical composition for orchestra and voices that incorporates narratives on religious themes. MUSIC GENRES OF BAROQUE MUSIC 5. CHORALE musical compositions that resemble a harmonized version of hymnal tunes of the Protestant Church during the Baroque era. FAMOUS COMPOSERS OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH Germany Birth: March 21, 1685 Death: July 28, 1750 JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH - came from the family of musician. - he was known for his composition for organ,orchestra and oratorio. - his most important and long-term position was a cantor. BACH’S COMPOSITION FUGUE: Toccata and Fugue in D Major ORATORIO: Bach’s Christmas Oratorio CONCERTO GROSSO: Brandenburg Concertos FAMOUS COMPOSERS OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD ANTONIO VIVALDI Venice, March 4, 1678 to Vienna, July 28, 1741 ANTONIO VIVALDI - nicknamed il Prete Rosso (the Red Priest) because of his red hair. - was an Italian Baroque composer, Catholic priest, and a virtuoso violinist. - recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers. VIVALDI’S COMPOSITION The Four Seasons Winter Summer Autumn Spring FAMOUS COMPOSERS OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD GEORGE FRIENDRICH HANDEL Germany, February 23, 1685 London, April 14, 1759 GEORGE FRIENDRICH HANDEL - Handel is remembered for his operas and oratorios and became England’s favorite composer - Handel lost both his eyesight in 1753.
