PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY DR. ADLA AHMED What is Preventive Dentistry? Dentistry that is aimed at preventing dental caries. It is a joint effort between the dentist ,the hygienist ,and the patient. Some ways which dental caries can be prevented by are : 1. Fluoride 2. Fissure sealant Systemic Fluoride : ❑ Water fluoridation: The process of adjusting the fluoride content of fluoride-deficient water to the recommended level for optimal dental health. Recomended level of fluoride in drinking water is 0.7 milligrams per Liter (mg/L). ❑ Dietary fluoride supplements: Prescribed for high caries risk children ages ( 6 months to 16 years ) of age. Tablets, lozenges, drops, chewing gums. Topical fluoride : ❑ Self applied topical fluorides ✓ Fluoride containing toothpaste. ✓ Fluoride Mouth rinse or Gels. ❑ Professionally Applied topical fluorides ✓ Fluoride Mouth rinse, Gels, or Foams( more concentrated than the self-applied fluorides ) ✓ Fluoride-Containing Prophylaxis Paste. ✓ Fluoride Varnish. Fluoride gel Professionally Applied topical fluorides ▪ Carried to the oral cavity using a disposable tray ▪ Available in different colors and flavors Steps for fluoride gel application: 1. Squeeze the gel into the tray and leave it in patients mouth for 1 minute 2. Ask the patient to spit out material (do not rinse ) 3. Patient should not eat for 30 minutes Fluoride-Containing Prophylaxis Paste Professionally Applied topical fluorides ▪ It's used after removal of calculus (scaling ) ▪ It reduces sensitivity Flouride varnish Professionally Applied topical fluorides ▪ Used to close dentinal tubules ✓ 1st layer blocks 55% of dentinal tubules ✓ 2nd layer closes 85% ▪ Reduces sensitivity since It contains fluoride Fissure sealant ❑ Used mainly in deep pits and fissures that are not carious in children's permanent teeth. Steps of application: 1. Clean the tooth 2. Etch tooth for 15 sec then wash and dry 3. Apply pit and fissure sealant 4. Light cure for 20 to 30 sec
