# Language and Communication ## Charmaine Delos Reyes Obregon ## What is language? Language is a system of communication that relies on verbal or non-verbal codes to transfer information. ## First Language - What was the first language in the world? - Sanskrit As far as the world knew, Sanskrit stood as the first spoken language because it dated as back as 5000 BC. New information indicates that although Sanskrit is among the oldest spoken languages, Tamil dates back further. Tamil dates as far back as 350 BC - works like the 'Tholkappiyam', an ancient poem, stand as evidence. ## Origin of Language - What is language and its origin? Linguists believe that all modern languages can trace their roots back to a single common ancestor known as Proto-Indo-European (PIE). This proto-language is thought to have originated in Central Europe around 7500 BC and spread throughout Europe, Asia Minor, and India as people migrated or traded with each other. ## Characteristics of Language - Arbitrary - Productive - Creative - Systematic - Vocalic - Social ## What is Communication? - Communication is the sending and receiving of information and can be one-on-one or between groups of people, and can be face-to-face or through communication devices. Communication requires a sender, the person who initiates communication, to transfer their thoughts or encode a message. - Communication is commonly defined as the transmission of information. Its precise definition is disputed and there are disagreements about whether unintentional or failed transmissions are included and whether communication not only transmits meaning but also creates it. Models of communication are simplified overviews of its main components and their interactions. Many models include the idea that a source uses a coding system to express information in the form of a message. The main field of inquiry investigating communication is called communication studies. ## Origin of Communication - The word communication has its root in the Latin verb _communicare_, which means ‘to share’ or ‘to make common’. ## 5 Major Characteristics of Communication - **Clear** - Main ideas easily identified and understood. - **Concise** - Gets to the point without using unneeded words or images. - **Concrete** - Includes specific examples or explanations. - **Correct** - In information, word choice, and grammar. - **Coherent** - Information presented in a logical sequence. # Thank You for Listening!
