**Practice Midterm** **Multiple Choice** *Identify the letter of the choice that **[best]** completes the statement or answers the question.* *Then **[fill]** in the answers on the [bubble sheet] and [write the capital letter] next to each answer.* \(1) It is said that a true Renaissance man needs to have creativity in the disciplines he takes up, as well as being a politician. Michelangelo was such a person. Michelangelo Buonarroti was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer during the years of the Renaissance. His early paintings and sculptures showed a unique personal style. During his lifetime, he was also often called ***[Il Divino]*** ("The Divine One"). Indeed, Michelangelo is a true Renaissance man. \(2) Michelangelo was raised in Florence, Italy. He was born on March 6, 1475, in the small village of Capresse in Tuscany. After the death of his mother, he lived with a stonecutter and his wife and family in the town of Settignano. Michelangelo's father owned a marble excavation and a small farm in that town. In 1490, Michelangelo studied to be a painter and sculptor against his father's wishes. \(3) When Michelangelo was a young man, political problems in Florence made it necessary for him to move to Rome. Because of the political problems during ***[his]*** lifetime, Michelangelo often moved back and forth between Florence and Rome. When the political problems **calmed down**, Michelangelo settled in Florence. His first sculptures were *Madonna of the Steps* (1490-1492) and *Battle of the Centaurs* (1491-1492). Michelangelo believed that every stone had a statue within it, and that the work of sculpting was simply a matter of chipping away all that was not a part of the sculpture. For Florence, the statue *David* was a political statement. It represented the victory of a weak person over the powerful giant Goliath -- a powerful man who was killed by David, a boy with a slingshot. In other words, *David* symbolized the people of Florence's freedom from the control of outsiders. The statue was placed in the center of a plaza, or square, outside a church. This plaza was the public meeting area of the people of Florence. It took forty men four days to move the statue six hundred yards to the plaza. It took another twenty days to raise it on to the platform. Today *David* is not thought of as a political statement. It is considered rather as one of the most famous and admired statues. ![A person in armor holding a shield and a spear Description automatically generated](media/image2.png) *Picture of David before killing Goliath* \(5) In 1505 Pope Julius II called Michelangelo to Rome. The Pope wanted him to build for him a tomb. Under the patronage -- support -- of the Pope, Michelangelo worked on the project. However, he was constantly stopped in order to work on several other tasks. As a result, Michelangelo worked on the tomb for 40 years. However, the biggest task that was given to him was in 1508. ***[It]*** was to paint the ceiling of one of the churches. Despite his low opinion of painting, for four years Michelangelo painted what is today one of the most beautiful works of art in the world, the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The painting contained over 300 figures. Among the most famous paintings on the ceiling are the Creation of Adam, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the Great Flood, the Prophet Isaiah and the Cumaean Sibyl. Later in 1534, Michelangelo was called again to paint the altar of the same church. The painting is called *The Last Judgment,* and it is one of his last works in Rome. \(6) Michelangelo was also a talented architect. In 1513 Pope Leo X, asked Michelangelo to reconstruct the façade of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence and to decorate it with sculptures. In addition, he was asked to build a family **funerary** chapel -- in which some of the Popes of the Medici are buried -- in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence. Unfortunately, the work was stopped because of financial problems. This project was very frustrating for Michelangelo since it took him most of the 1520s and the 1530s. However, it is the best example of the **integration** of the artist\'s skills. His skills as a sculptor and an architect are put together beautifully. In 1530, Michelangelo designed the Laurentian Library in Florence, which is next to the church of San Lorenzo. \(7) At the age of 60, Michelangelo left Florence for good because of the endless political problems. He settled in Rome and achieved major architectural accomplishments there. In 1546, Michelangelo became architect of St. Peter\'s Basilica in the Vatican, Rome and designed its dome. He developed new styles, such as pilasters -- tapering columns -- thinner at the bottom, and staircases with contrasting rectangular and curving shapes. Other major Roman projects of Michelangelo's are Palazzo Farnese, San Giovanni de\' Fiorentini and the Sforza Chapel, Porta Pia and Santa Maria degli Angeli. Tourists and students visit these places for their remarkable beauty and simplicity. His body was brought back from Rome for burial at the Basilica di Santa Croce. His last request was to be buried in his beloved Tuscany. Having lived in both cities, Michelangelo's ***[mark]*** is left on both Rome and Florence with some of the greatest works of Renaissance art.
