Physical parameters for bacterial growth Ms. Mahima Borkar Assistant Professor SAGE University Bhopal physical parameters for bacterial growth. 1. Temperature Psychrophiles: Thrive in cold environments (-20°C to 10°C). Mesophiles: Optimal growth between 20°C and 45°C; includes most human pathogens. Thermophiles: Grow best at higher temperatures (45°C to 80°C). Hyperthermophiles: Thrive in extremely hot environments (80°C to 121°C).. 2. pH Levels Acidophiles: Optimal growth at low pH (below 5.5). Neutrophiles: Grow best in neutral pH environments (pH 6.5-7.5). Alkaliphiles: Thrive in high pH environments (above 8.0). 3. Oxygen Requirements Obligate Aerobes: Require oxygen to grow. Obligate Anaerobes: Cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. Facultative Anaerobes: Can grow with or without oxygen. Microaerophiles: Require low oxygen levels. Aerotolerant Anaerobes: Do not require oxygen but are not harmed by it. 4. Osmotic Pressure Halophiles: Require high salt concentrations to grow. Osmotolerant Bacteria: Can survive in varying osmotic conditions. 5. Hydrostatic Pressure some bacteria, particularly deep-sea bacteria (barophiles), are adapted to survive under high-pressure conditions. 6. Light Some bacteria, like phototrophs, use light as an energy source. UV light can also inhibit or kill bacteria by damaging their DNA.
