Philosophy Class Social Contract 1. Purpose and Importance To create a respectful, open, and intellectually stimulating environment. To encourage critical thinking, open-mindedness, and respectful dialogue. To ensure a safe space for the exploration and discussion of diverse philosophical ideas. 2. Expectations for Students Respect: Treat classmates, the teacher, and differing viewpoints with respect. Listen actively and avoid interrupting others. Responsibility: Come prepared with completed readings and assignments. Take responsibility for your own learning. Participation: Engage thoughtfully in discussions, share your perspectives, and ask insightful questions. Honesty: Be honest in your academic work. Avoid plagiarism and give proper credit for ideas and quotes. Inclusivity: Respect the diversity of thought and experience. Encourage inclusive discussions and avoid any form of discrimination or harassment. 3. Expectations for the Teacher Respect: Treat all students with respect and fairness. Encourage a variety of viewpoints and foster a culture of open dialogue. Support: Provide guidance and support to help students develop their philosophical thinking and writing skills. Offer constructive and timely feedback. Preparation: Prepare engaging and challenging lessons that stimulate critical thinking. Be organized and punctual. Use respectful and considerate language, especially during debates. Respect the classroom environment and property. No eating, drinking, or use of electronic devices unless permitted for class purposes. 5. Consequences for Breaking the Contract Verbal warning from the teacher. Reflection assignment on the importance of the violated rule. Loss of grade points. Meeting with the teacher and/or school administration for serious or repeated offenses. 6. Positive Reinforcement Verbal praise and acknowledgment of insightful contributions. Opportunities to lead class discussions or present on philosophical topics of interest. Recognition of exceptional work and improvement. 7. Student and Teacher Commitment I as a student, and the teacher of this Philosophy class, commit to following this social contract to foster a respectful, open, and intellectually engaging environment.
