PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK 3 Learning Targets: discuss developmental tasks and challenges being experienced during adolescence evaluate one’s development through the help of significant people around him/her (peers, parents, siblings, friends, teachers, community leaders) Situation No. 1 John is an active member of school organizations. He has a lot of talents to share and ideas to contribute to their club. Aside from that, he is known for his looks, neatness, and tidiness. However, these seemingly likeable characteristics became the reasons that many get envious and try to create rumors and gossips about him. This hurt him so much that he almost wanted to drop from schooling GIVE YOUR REACTION: Situation No. 2 Erica is a Grade 11 student. Like any other girls she is sociable and have a lot of friends in school. She is just an average student, but having a crush on her top one classmate urged her to spend late nights studying to keep up with him. However, all her efforts still fell short and she did not make it to the cut of students with honors. Because of this, she developed an eating disorder that caused her to lose huge weight. She also started to have breakouts. With these, the then friendly Erica became aloof and selfconscious. GIVE YOUR REACTION: PROCESSING QUESTIONS: 1. DEVELOPMENTAL CHALLENGES OF ADOLESCENCE Cambridge Dictionary defines developmental as relating to the process of growing or changing into a more advance, larger and stronger form. Challenges is defined as something that needs great mental or physical effort in order to be done successfully and therefore tests a person's ability. The following is a brief summary of the most significant developmental issues every adolescence face: 1. PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATION probably the most obvious changes are physical; the teenager is literally transforming from a child to an adult physically, a transformation that is disorienting to both the teenager and everyone around him/her. 2. SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT the teenage years witness the emergence of sexuality, with all of its hormonal changes, all of its ups and downs and all of its emotional complications. 3. SEPARATION FROM PARENTS the teenager is on a crash course of how to live life with primary dependence on him/herself rather than being guided, taught and supported by parents. 4. IDENTITY VS ROLE CONFUSION a stage characterized by asking "Who am I," and learning more about your own goals, values, and beliefs. 5. SOCIAL ISSUES with growing adulthood comes the challenge of learning what groups and communities a person wants to be part of and how those groups and communities impact their own sense of individuality. 6. GROWING RESPONSIBILITY a substantial challenge for any teenager is learning to bear the personal responsibility of living a healthy, productive, compassionate and caring adult life. 7. TRUE SELF VS. FALSE SELF the teenager, in individuating from his/her family, begins to learn who he/she truly is and how that true self relates to ways they may have pretended to be. 8. PURPOSE the teenager is struggling mightily with what constitutes purpose and meaning in their lives and how real and practical those are. 9. FAITH VS CYNICISM the teenager is also beginning to deal with what we would broadly call spirituality, whether to have faith or not, whether to engage in cynicism or push through that. Evaluating One’s Development Through the Help of Others Influential People in My Life People normally look up to influential personalities who have shown greatness in terms of leadership, intelligence, creativity, talents, and charisma.
