Pectoral region Dr. Ahmed Elsaeed Ayad 01001170879 Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Pectoral region 1. Pectoralis major muscle 2. Pectoralis minor muscle 3. Subclavius muscle Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy 1-Pectoralis major muscle: Origin: a) Clavicular head; front of medial 2/3rd of clavicle. b) Sternocostal head: front of sternum -upper 6 costal cartilages. Insertion: Humerus - lateral lip of bicipital groove. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Pectoralis major muscle: Nerve supply: Medial & lateral pectoral nerves Action: -Adduction & medial rotation of the arm - Flexion of arm. - It acts as accessory inspiratory & helps in climbing. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy 2. Pectoralis minor muscle: Origin: Front of the 3rd, 4th & 5th ribs. Insertion: Coracoid process of scapula Nerve supply: Medial pectoral nerve Action: -Protraction of scapula. -Depresses shoulder -help inspiration. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy 3. Subclavius muscle: Origin: 1st costochondral junction Insertion: clavicle (subclavius groove) Nerve supply: nerve to subclavius Action: stabilizing the clavicle. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Muscles of the back Muscles of the back are arranged into two layers: A.Superficial layer: 1. Trapezius. 2. latissimus dorsi.. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Muscles of the back B-Deep layer: 1. Levator scapula. 2. Rhomboideus minor. 3. Rhomboideus major Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Superficial layer 1.Trapezius muscle: Origin: 1-Back of the skull: 2. back of neck: Ligamentum nuchae 3. vertebral column(C7-T12) Insertion: 1. Clavicle: Posterior border of lateral 1/3rd 2. Scapula: medial border acromion -upper border spine. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Trapezius Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy 1.Trapezius muscle: Nerve supply: Spinal part of accessory nerve ( motor) Action: 1. Upper fibers: Elevation of the shoulder. 2.Middle fibers: Retract the scapula. 3. lower fibers: depress the shoulder. 4. raise the arm above the head. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy 2. latissmus Dorsi muscle: Origin: 1. (T7-T12). 2. Thoracolumbar fascia. 3. iliac crest. 4. lower 4 ribs. 5. Inferior angle of scapula. Insertion: Floor of bicipital groove of the humerus Nerve supply: Thoracodorsal (nerve to latissimus dorsi). Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Action –Adduction and medially rotation of the arm - extension of arm. -Climbing, Swimming and Accessory muscle of respiration. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Deep layer levator scapulae, rhomboideus minor and rhomboideus major muscles. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy (1) Levator scapulae muscle: Origin: Transverse processes of C1 - C4 vertebrae. Insertion: Medial border of dorsal surface of scapula above spine. Nerve supply: Dorsal scapular nerve (C5). Action: Elevates scapula Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy (2) Rhomboidus minor muscle: Origin: C7 to T1 vertebrae. Insertion: medial border of dorsal surface of scapula at level of spine. Nerve supply: Dorsal scapular nerve (C5). Action: Retracts the scapula. Rashid University , Faculty of Physical Therapy (3) Rhomboideus major muscle: Origin: T2 to T5 vertebrae. Insertion: medial border of dorsal surface of scapula below of spine. Nerve supply: Dorsal scapular nerve (C5). Action: Retracts the scapula and rotates the scapula.
