Read the passage given below. 1. Kalpana Chawla was an extraordinary woman who left an indelible mark on India and the world. Born in Karnal, Haryana, India, in 1961, she was a passionate aviator and an accomplished astronaut. Her inspiring journey from a young girl with big dreams to becoming the first woman of Indian origin to venture into space is nothing short of phenomenal. 2. Kalpana Chawla's fascination with the skies began at a young age. As a child, she loved to stargaze and would often wonder what lay beyond the Earth's atmosphere. This curiosity fuelled her determination to pursue a career in aeronautical engineering. Kalpana's academic brilliance and dedication earned her a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. Later Kalpana moved to the United States to pursue her higher studies. Her academic accomplishments opened the doors to her dream career as a NASA astronaut. 3. In 1997, Kalpana was selected by NASA as a mission specialist and was later assigned to her first space mission on the Space Shuttle Columbia. On November 19, 1997, she embarked on her maiden space voyage, STS-87, making history as the first Indian-born woman to travel to space. 4. Kalpana's exceptional journey didn't end there. In 2003, she was chosen for her second space mission, STS-107, on the Space Shuttle Columbia. Tragically, on February 1, 2003, the Columbia disintegrated during re-entry, leading to the loss of all seven crew members, including Kalpana Chawla. Her death was a profound loss to India and the global space community. 5. Kalpana's legacy lives on as an inspiration to countless individuals.
