**Unit 7** **[PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT AND POWER DRESSING ]** **DRESS CODE AND PERSONAL GROOMING GUIDELINES** St. Alexius College commits to ensuring a safe, healthful, and positive working environment, free from disruption, where people can grow and learn. The school provides a dress code and personal grooming guideline for staff and rople receiving services. Compliance with the standards of grooming and dress noted in these guidelines is important to our mission. There are no \"absolute\" rules regarding dress; our personal grooming is as important as what we wear. Many object to being judged based on how we look. We prefer opinions about our character be based on our skills and abilities, not because of our dress and grooming. But, like it or not appearance is important. The primary goal is to feel good about the way you look. When you take the time to dress and groom for success, you tend to feel good about yourself. When you feel good about yourseli, you naturally convey confidence and a positive attitude. *\*\*\*\*Excerpts from the St. Alexius College* **Student Handbook ARTICLE XI NON-ACADEMIC POLICIES** **Section 1- Rules of Conduct** 1. Student Handbook Upon enrollment, every student is furnished with a copy of the Student Handbook which will serve as a guide. **Section 2- School Uniform and Personal Attire** **2.1** The school uniform must be worn with respect and dignity. Only students wearing the prescribed uniform will be allowed to enter the school premises and the classroom. Second courser students are required to wear the prescribed uniform. **2.2** All students are required to wear the standard school uniform and ID on all school days Monday to Saturday. And they should likewise be well-groomed: **2.2.1** Male Students \- Blue polo with School Seal \- Gray slacks \- Black Leather Shoes \- Plain White Undershirt (tuck-in) **2.2.2** Female Students \- Blue blouse with Cravat with School Seal \- Gray Skirt \- Black closed Shoes with 1 inch heels **2.3** Students are prohibited from wearing the following while in campus or while attending school activities: [For men: ] \- Sleeveless shirts \- Bonnets/caps \- Slippers \- Tattered jeans/pants \- Shorts \- Earrings and other forms of body piercing \- Long hair, facial hair and dyed hair [For women:] \- Tops with plunging neckline \- Backless shirt/blouse/dress \- Spaghetti-strapped/hanging blouse \- See-thru blouse/dress \- Shorts \- Mini-skirt/micro-skirt \- Tattered jeans/pants \- Slippers **2.4** Students not in complete uniform will not be allowed to enter the school premises. **2.5** In the event that the student is unable to wear the prescribed uniform by the reason of force majeure (fire, flood, etc.) or exigency of the situation, the following must be complied with, before entering the campus. **2.5.1** A letter from the parent stating the occurrence of such force majeure or exigency of the situation shall be presented to the guard for approval by the Director of Student Affairs. **2.5.2** After due assessment as to the veracity of the reasons cited, a uniform exemption slip form shall be granted by the Director of Student Affairs to the student fir a prescribed period of the time as latter may deem fit. **2.5.3** Other analogous circumstances such as incomplete wearing of uniform (wearing of sandals, slippers, etc.) by reason of feet injury, a medical clinic for the verification by the Physician or School Nurse. The Physician or School Nurse may indicate therein, the projected number of days for recuperation. This will be the basis of the Director of Student Affairs in issuing the exact number of days within which a student may be allowed to wear sandals, slippers, etc. **2.5.4** All students on practicum are required to wear their prescribed practicum uniforms. **2.5.5** Students who are taking Second Degree program are required to wear the prescribed school uniform. **(Female uniform)** **(Male uniform)** Your appearance is a statement of who you are. Personal Grooming: **Hands:** Wash hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, after break or lunch, before returning to work or activities, after completing care giving tasks. In short, wash your hands frequently. **Hair:** Clean, trimmed, and neatly combed or arranged. Depending on the task, hair worn long may need to be gathered or tied back to ensure your safety. **Facial Hair (men only):** Freshly shaved, mustache or beard neatly trimmed. **Fingernails:** Clean and trimmed. **Teeth:** Brushed and fresh breath. We encourage you to brush your teeth after lunch. **Breath:** Beware of tobacco, coffee, or other breath odors. Use breath mints if needed. **Body:** Freshly bathed or showered; use soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc. **Perfume/Colognes/After-Shave:** Use sparingly or none at all. Your \"scent\" should not linger after you leave. **Dress Code:** Neat, clean clothes are suitable for daily attendance at Allegany Arc. Common sense and good taste are the best guides for selecting clothing worn at Arc. We encourage people to launder clothing on a regular basis. The following guidelines assist in clothing selection for Arc attendance**:** -Shoes or Suitable footwear must be worn. Open-toed or sandal-style shoes are not permitted me working in Day Programs or Residential sites. Heel height should permit swift movements. -Appropriate and clean undergarments are required. -All pants should be worn at the natural waist. -Loose pants may require a belt/suspenders to keep the waist in place. -Undergarments should not be visible above the waistline or hanging below the hemline of shorts. -Clean socks are recommended. -Minimize jewelry worn; if it interferes with job tasks or creates safety concerns remove it. A watch, engagement and wedding rings, and most religious or cultural jewelry are acceptable. Post-style jewelry is required for body piercings, hoop-style and dangle-style jewelry should be removed or covered to prevent injury during care giving tasks. -Personal Protective Equipment, including gloves, glasses, and masks, must be worn whenever situations warrant. -Store coats and bags on shelves or on a coat rack during the day. For safety reasons, coats and hats are to be removed when working indoors. -All clothing, including coats and hats, must be clean and neat appearing. -Hemlines of skirts hang no higher than three (3) inches above the knee and shorts hang no higher than four (4) inches above the knee. -Allegany Arc guidelines prohibit some clothing it ems from being worn during service delivery. Use good judgment when discussing appropriateness of clothing or grooming with another individual. Take into consideration where the service is occurring and the objectives to be achieved. Remember - the primary goal is to feel good about our appearance. **XXXX Clothing items not acceptable:** \- Garments that expose traditionally private parts of the body, including the stomach, buttocks, back and breasts. (Such as \"midriffs\", halter tops, backless clothing, \"tube tops\", fishnet, mesh or similar material, tank tops, \"muscle tops\". \', see-through shirts or blouses, strapless clothing, or beachwear) \- Any clothing, paraphernalia, grooming, jewelry, accessories, or body adornments containing ads, symbols, words, slogans, patches, or pictures that are sexually suggestive; that are drug, tobacco, or alcohol related; that are obscene, profane, vulgar, lewd, indecent, or offensive. \- Inappropriately sheer, tight clothing, or spandex-type materials. \- Bedroom slippers, rubber shoe thongs (flip flops). -Shorts, miniskirts, underwear or nightwear as outerwear and slit clothing. -Jewelry that may cause a safety concern considering the tasks to be performed. This includes long dangling earrings, bracelets, large rings, chains, or necklaces. Most of us have heard the expression, \"A picture is worth a thousand words.\" Remember this when preparing to meet people or attend social events. Most people form a first impression during the first few seconds of meeting a person. Little is spoken in this short time; judgments are based strictly on appearance. Our dressing says a great deal about who we are and influences all kinds of impressions. People make snap judgments about us from the clothes we wear. They draw conclusions about our personality from the way we look. So if you think \"opinions\" don\'t matter, \"impressions\" might do which is why \"dressing\" most certainly matters. Dressing is an art obviously, the art of knowing how to carry ourselves during various occasions we partake in. The occasions dictate how we should dress to suit the mood of the events. Dressing for any occasion is about paying respect to the occasion and the people around you. Here below we present to you an easy guide to dress codes for every occasion. **A WEDDING** A wedding usually is a black-tie or a white-tie event unless the bride and the groom have decided to theme it to some movie they love. It always pays off taking out a little time to make a call-to your host before you show up at their doorsteps. If it\'s a festive event, dress up like you are there to celebrate, little glitz and color won\'t hurt. **A business dinner or a company party** Don\'t dress up an outfit that is too provocative during business dinner party. You want to be taken seriously when it comes to job promotions and dressing provocatively on any of the company occasions would not play to your benefit. The dress code is \"smart-casual\" i.e. casual but work appropriate. When it is about work, you should always keep it professional. Style gurus suggests that women can wear dress pants, a casual dress or a skirt with a nice red shirt and lompany party. Religious events tend to be more conservative thus, it is better to double-check its conventions before you choose an offending apparel. Women are suggested to wear a skirt that is below the knee, cardigans or nice khakis with no shoulder or back visible. Stay away from low-cut or clingy outfits as they can be offending in such places. However, on celebrations like a baptism, it is important not to wear anything that is too serious, go with the colors of the festivity. Men can wear a proper formal suit. **A funeral** The color black is the safest choice if you are dressing up for a funeral but if is not mandatory. Solemnity of the event can be conveyed with other dark neutrals like navy, charcoal or forest green. For women, a pantsuit or a knee-length dress is deemed appropriate for the occasion. Opt for quiet jewelries like pearls. Men can put on a dark suit if that doesn\'t look anything near festive. **A Night at the heater, the Ballet, or the Opera** There were days when a night at a theatre, ballet or opera meant dressing up to the best to faungloves. Man were suited on their best tuxedos, women put on their best ball gowns with gloves and scarfs to complement their men. The code is casual. Anything goes. The stylists say, \"If you are a woman, wear a sundress, a skirt or pants with a pretty top to a casual event. If you are not a woman, wear khakis with button-down, a sweater, or a polo shirt.\" The simplest code to dressing is to dress largely according to your physique, time and season to keep alive the elegancy and comfort at the same time. **Make up guidelines** [How to Apply Makeup Properly? ] The most basic premise of the application of makeup for use on the face is to select an appropriate shade of foundation or base, in order to establish a pleasing and natural skin tone. Apply the moisturizer and let it soak in at least 3 minutes before applying foundation. Take appropriate amount and apply it on the face and neck, avoiding eyes area. Moisturizer applied prior to makeup will help to retain moisture and keep the skin smooth and supple. **Foundation:** The correct foundation must cover, with a thin coating, both area of colorations and blemish discoloration, as well as to establish a proper and correct skin tone. Choose a foundation color that is close to your own skin tone, otherwise it will look unnatural. The foundation should be sheer, to even out your skin tone. The best way to apply it is using your fingertips or a makeup sponge. Using fingertips will give the heaviest application, but a sponge gives a thinner application. Dot foundation on your nose, chin, cheeks, forehead and neck. Start with a small amount of foundation, blending it as you go. Make sure everything blends together and looks the same. To conceal dark circles under the eyes apply small amount and blend well. If your skin is oily use lighter weight foundation, otherwise it can accentuate the enlarged pores and can even clog them. **Concealer:** The next step is the application of concealer. It is one of the smooth skin essentials. Its purpose isall piper the dark ircles under the eyes, redness caused by broken capillaries, small pimples or dark spots. Apply the concealer to problem areas. Start with a slightly darker tones and blend into with a sponge to match the lighter foundation in order to avoid creating light spots. Use your ring finger to apply under-eye concealer or cover stick beneath the eye or above the eyelid moving left and right. To hide pimples or spots, use thick concealer that matches your skin tone. Apply it using a small makeup brush directly on the spot and blend slightly till it disappears. **Powder:** The face powder is used to set makeup and hold it in place. They come in a variety of colors to match the foundation and in a translucent shade which are used with all colors of makeup. The powder must always be applied after the foundation and concealer. You can apply powder by two ways: using a powder brush or through cosmetic puff. When using a brush \"dab\" the powder brush into the powder and then shake off the excess powder. The application through a puff is appropriate for those with oily or combination skin. Never apply too much powder because your face will look unnatural. Always match the powder with your natural skin tone. **Blusher:** Blusher brings a blush and glow to your face. Blusher gives a warm, healthy flush to the cheeks. A creamy blusher works best with a creamy foundation. Apply blusher using a blusher brush \"dip\" the brush quickly and flick your wrist to stroke the cheeks lightly. Use a soft circular motion from the center of the cheekbones out. When applied properly blusher can shape the face, making a round face appear longer or a long face seem rounded. The powder blusher is appropriate for those with normal skin, as well as for those with oily skin. **Mascara:** Great care is needed when applying eye makeup, because the skin around the eyes is very thin and delicate. Sometimes makeup can set up an irritation and cause eye infections, especially when using old mascara. The powder shadows last longer and you should apply them using a brush. The creamy eyeshadows are easier to apply but they tend to melt into crease lines of the eyelids. For lasting color, apply foundation or concealer to the lid, then swept a wash of color over the top, dotting in on the inner corner to opnen up the eyes. **Lipstick:** Always apply the lipstick at the end. Draw a thin line along the edge of your lips with pencil, using a shade darker than the lipstick. For better results use a brush to apply lipstick. Apply a dusting of powder to the lips in order to maximize its staying power. Always harmonize your lip color to the rest of your makeup. The creamy lipsticks go on more easily and are better for moisturizing your lips. The longer wearing lipsticks tend to be drier and usually last 4 - 6 hours. **Rule for Accessories** \- Moderation is the key.
