# Pass it On by Sara Matson, art by John Joven ## Part 1 * One summer day, Mouse packed a picnic. "I'll walk to the pond," she thought, "I'll sit on the soft grass. I'll watch dragonflies sparkle in the sun." * She was almost there when she heard a croak, "Help!" * Mouse followed the sound to the pond. Frog was there, tugging on something. * "What's wrong, Frog?" Mouse asked. * "My foot is stuck in this fishnet," Frog cried. * Mouse went over to help. She nibbled the net strings with her sharp teeth. By the time Mouse got Frog unstuck, it was too late for her picnic. * Frog hopped high in the air. "How can I thank you, Mouse?" * "No need," Mouse said. "Just pass it on." So Frog did. * The next day, Frog played lily-pad leap in the pond. He heard a sneeze, "Achoo!" * Frog followed the sound to the meadow. Skunk was there, wiping her nose. * "What's wrong, Skunk?" Frog asked. "I have a cold," Skunk said. * Frog helped Skunk home. He tucked her into bed. He poured her a cup of clover tea. He read her a story. * Skunk yawned, "How can I thank you, Frog?" * "No need," Frog said. "Just pass it on." So Skunk did. ## Part 2 * The next day, Skunk picked marigolds in the meadow. She heard a familiar voice say, "Ouch!" * Skunk followed the sound to a honey tree. Bear was there, sucking his paw. * "What's wrong, Bear?" Skunk asked. * "A bee stung me!" Bear said. Skunk soaked a cloth in cold water. She bandaged Bear's paw. She filled Bear's honey jar. She got very sticky. * "How can I thank you, Skunk?" Bear said. * "No need," Skunk said. "Just pass it on." So Bear did. * The next day, Bear went for a walk. He heard a sad song, "Waa, waa, waa." * Bear followed the sound to a house. Mouse was there, sweeping her steps. * "What's wrong, Mouse?" Bear asked, "I feel lonely today," Mouse said. * "Come on a picnic with me," Bear said. So Bear and Mouse walked to the pond. They sat on the soft grass. They watched dragonflies sparkle in the sun. They ate dandelion salad and honey buns and blackberry pie. * Mouse smiled, "How can I thank you, Bear?" * "No need," Bear said. "Just pass it on." And, of course, Mouse did.
