Boullón presented his theory of touristic space in the book Planificación del espacio turístico (Planning of tourism space), released by Mexican publisher Trillas in 1985. Tourist space is a consequence of the existence and distribution of territorial tourist attractions, which we must not forget, as raw materials for tourism. This heritage tourist element, alongside business ventures and tourist infrastructure, is enough to define any country's tourist space. Tourist space is determined by observing the distribution of territorial tourist attractions and infrastructure. Thus it becomes possible to identify various components, which are classified according to their size. These components can be distinguished as zones, areas, complexes, centers, units, cores, clusters, corridors, transit corridors and finally visiting corridors. The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Boullón Theory of Tourism Space Boullón presents three categories of tourist elements, including: 1. Elements covering a relatively large surface area: Zones Area Center Complex Core Clusters Distribution centres. 2. Localized elements, covering a relatively small area: Scale centres Visiting centres Units. 3. Longitudinal elements: Transit corridors Visiting corridors The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Zone Tourism zones' are the largest units for analyzing and compiling a country's touristic spatial universe. Its size varies as it depends on the area of the country in which it is located. Each zone should have at least ten relatively close tourist attractions The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Zone The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Area Tourist areas' are the parts of a zone that can be divided into, and their surface is smaller than the whole that contains them‘. They function as subsystems of a larger system and must have good transport and communication infrastructure, along with a tourist center and a minimum of ten tourist attractions. The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Center The tourist center is an entire urban conglomeration that has tourist attractions in its own territory or within its radius of influence (approx. 2 hours of distance-time) of sufficient type and rank to motivate tourist travel. They can be divided into the following categories: Distribution tourist centers: tourists settle there for 1-3 days and visit all nearby tourist attractions. Visiting tourist centers: tourists stay there and visit the same attractions every day, for example beaches. Scale tourist centers: connections of transport networks and intermediate points on long journeys, i.e. intermediate stages between exit and entry markets. Excursion tourist centers: receive tourists for at least 24 hours; These tourists come from other tourist centers The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Complex Tourist complex consists of groupings larger than the center but smaller than the zone. It has one or more 'attractions' of the highest rank, whose visits, related to others that complement them, assume a stay of three or more days. Although the existence of a tourist complex depends on the presence of at least one distribution tourist center, it can also be arranged on the basis of two or more centers. A classic example of a tourist complex is the Iguaçu National Park, where two tourist centers strive to work in a coordinated manner: the Argentine (http://www.iguazuargentina.com) and the Brazilian side (http://www.cataratasdoiguacu.com.br). The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Units A tourist unit is a 'concentration of smaller facilities' produced to intensively explore one or more attractions located next to each other'. Thus, the tourist unit can be a water park (waterpark) or a forested garden with a gazebo and walking trails in the woods. The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Nucleus The tourist nucleus is a grouping of tours that have between two and nine tourist attractions and that are isolated in the region, hampering its operation. Tourist nucleus are connected to a road network, a factor that changes its spatial situation. This is the phase where the core consolidates operations by building a tourism business. The Tourism Space: Concept and characteristics Tourist Corridors A tourism corridor is a route that connects the components of a tourist space. They can be for transit or visiting. The transit tourist corridor is a country's road network, through which tourists flow to complete their journey. Corridors with better landscaping should be prioritized, even when they are longer. There should be various tourist facilities along the corridor to ensure the safety of all passing tourists. These facilities should include gas stations, restaurants, shops, tire shops and hotels for overnight stays. The visiting tourism corridor 'plays the combined role of tourist center and corridor'. It is an elongated area that is usually located along rivers, lakes and seas. Some examples might include scenic highways in coastal areas or even tourist routes, usually off highways, passing through smaller places 2.2. However, when using this model, it is vital to understand that not all stages of the cycle are as clear, or long lasting as other stages.
