Unique to equids Their function is to invade the endometrium around day 35 and produce equine chorionic gonadotropin (ECG) that stimulates progesterone by the ovary in early pregnancy until around d~140 Recognize incidental findings in the fetus and placenta Discuss postmortem exam and sampling of the fetus/placenta ○ Steps: 1. Obtain clinical history 2. Identify the body (breed, species, sex) 3. Estimate gestational age 1. Measure crown to rump 2. Get body weight withOUT fetal membranes 4. Note aeration of the lungs 5. Look for evidence of fetal hypoxia, malformation, infection 1. What is an indicator of fetal hypoxia? a. Meconium staining ○ Collect samples for ancillary tests 1.
