While writing the manuscript, it became clear that presenting an Asian approach to sociology is not solely about focusing on the scholarships from the region but finding connec- tions (and disconnections) of Asian sociology to the roots of the discipline in Western thought and societies. Eventually, the subtitle was changed from «Introductory Sociology in Asian Con- texts" to ''Introductory Sociology in Comparative Perspectives" to account for these regional and global interfaces that shape contemporary sociology. The main title, however, remained. Other Societies not only highlights the comparative na- ture of the discipline but also underscores the fundamental orientation that sociologists take to recognize that «things are not what they seem" (Berger 1963: 23). It also refers to the principle of objectivity in positivist sociology or to the sense of distance and detachment that critical and interpretive sociologists see in the course of their relationships with their research subjects. Basi- cally, «other societies" are what keen students and social observers will encou11ter as they take a more critical look into societies, even those of their own. The textbook is broadly divided into five parts, with each part consisting of three topics cov- ering some of the fundamental topics in sociology. The first part (Ideas) focuses on education, the second (Identities) on sports, the third (Interactions) on mass and social media, the fourth (Institutions) on travel, and the last (Issues) on social change. Part One introduces students to some of the key concepts, theories, and social thinl
