# Chapter 4: Organizational Reward Systems ## Learning Objectives - Discuss the theoretical foundations of organizational reward systems. - Present research evidence supporting organizational reward systems. - Describe some of the types of rewards. - Relate some forms of reward systems to employee motivation. - Explain how recognition and reward programs can motivate employees. - Discuss the role of benefits in an organizational rewards system. Although reward systems are commonly discussed in organizational behavior textbooks, it is placed in this chapter because it is a key variable in the triadic reciprocal determinism model. This is the social cognitive approach that has been found to be applicable for organizational behavior. This model describes how human consequences or contingencies influence behavior. Bandura has noted that human social regulatory influence of rewards can have a significant impact on employee behavior. Although behavioral management is important in the workplace, it can be said now that the contingencies, cultures and a visionary strategy have a significant impact on employee behavior. These other things may become a much more important focus for the manager. One way to put this important point is to ask, “How can you get what you want?”
