Communication breakdown - may occur when one element is absent or does not function well and becomes a barrier to communication. Barriers to communication: 1. Physical Barriers - Natural or environmental condition that act as a barrier in communication Ex: people talking too loud, noise from a construction site, loud sound of a karaoke, and blaring of jeepney sounds 2. Psychological barriers - Called as mental barriers and refers to social and personal issues of a speaker towards communicating with others - Ex: trauma, shyness, lack of confidence, depression, fear, and stage fright 3. Cultural barriers - Communication problems encountered by people regarding their intrinsic values, beliefs, and traditions in conflict with others - Ex: different beliefs, traditions and customs, religion, age and gender 4. Linguistic barriers - Conflicts with regard to language and word meanings - Ex: difference in language, accent and dialect, use of jargon and slang, speech defects or language impairments - "Urungan mo na yung plato" (urungan - hugasan/ urungan- atrasan) 3 kinds of noise (Verderber 1991): 1. EXTERNAL - sight, sound, and other stimuli that draw people's attention away from meaning 2. INTERNAL - thoughts and feelings that interfere with meaning 3. SEMANTIC - alternate meanings aroused by a speaker's symbols 5 STRATEGIES TO AVOID COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN 1. Have clarity of thought - In order to avoid miscommunication, send message coherently - Nag-stutter pag walang clarity, name-mental block, thoughts are all over the place 2. Learn to listen - Being an attentive listener - Not interrupting in b order to understand the message conveyed 3. Be aware of your body language and tone - Appropriate gestures na related sa sinasabi - It is not always what you say, but how you deliver your message 4. Build up your confidence - Alam mo dapat yung sinasabi mo, nag-research - Para madeliver mo nang maayos yung message 5. Communicate face-to-face on important issues - May misinterpretation pag hindi f2f - Face to face dapat, especially on national issues - alice guo na umalis Strategies to avoid Communication Breakdown 1. Keep focused 2. Speak intelligible 3. Listen with your ears and eye 4. Minimize distractions 5. Do not jump into conclusions 7Cs of effective communication 1. Completeness Complete info is needed before sending a message to avoid misunderstandings - Listener will be able to grasp the intended message 2. Conciseness Message is short and concise (direct to the point) - Irrelevant info should not be included 3. Consideration - Consider the background, mood, race, status, gender, preference, educ, - In order to avoid saying offensive things - Being empathetic and sympathetic to your receiver 4. Concreteness - Message is factual, real-life situations, based on references - Using resources in order for the info to be factual 5. Courtesy Respecting one's culture, background, and personal attributes - Implies good choice of words and language and consideration - Helps create a positive vibe with the audience 6. Clearness Message is clear, simple, specific - I-claro in order to avoid miscommunication 7. Correctness Correctness in language use and grammar adds credibility - We may commit mistakes but being aware of our mistakes will help learn more
