Nursing as a Profession Manar Hamza Outlines: Introduction Definition of nursing History of nursing Nursing deals with Nursing as a profession Roles and functions of professional nurse Nursing ethics Introduction Nursing has responded to and always will continue to respond to the needs of its clients as in war. Definition of nursing Nursing is an art and science. This means that a professional nurse learns to deliver care artfully with compassion, caring, and a respect for each client's dignity and personhood. As a science, nursing is based upon a body of knowledge that is always changing with new discoveries and innovations American Nurses Association (ANA) definition of nursing Nursing is the protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations (ANA, 2003). DEFINITION OF NURSING Nursing integrates the art and science of caring and focuses on the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and human functioning; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; and alleviation of suffering through compassionate presence. Nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in recognition of the connection of all humanity. History of nursing The founder of Modern nursing: Florence Nightingale established the first nursing philosophy based on health maintenance and restoration. She developed the first organized program for training nurses the Nightingale Training school for nurses at St. Thomas' hospital in London (1860). Rufaidah bint Sa'ad, is recognized as the first Muslim nurse. She was born in Yathrib before the migration of the Prophet Muhammad. Nursing deals with oPromotion of health o Prevention of illness o Curative of disease o Restoration of health o Rehabilitation of disabling Nursing as profession In the past the principle role of nurses was to provide care and comfort as they carried out specific nursing functions, but changes in nursing have expanded the role to include increased emphases on health promotion and illness prevention, as well as concern for the client as a whole. Teaching has been seen as an essential component of nursing practice in caring for both well and ill client. Role of the nurse as educator: Nurses are also responsible for ensuring that patients can understand their health, illnesses, medications, and treatments to the best of their ability. This is particularly important when patients are discharged from the hospital and are responsible for continuing their treatments at home. Role of the nurse as educator: In every aspect of healthcare, nurses provide education, promote healthy practices, share their expertise, and help patients heal. By guiding patients and their families, nurses can also provide patients with appropriate referrals for other services, resources, and classes. Role of the nurse as educator: In addition to when patients leave the hospital, nurses also educate patients about their care plan daily. This is essential for the success of the treatment, as patients must be prepared for all steps of their treatment and recovery. Nurses are also responsible for training and helping other nurses. Nurse role as case manger: The nurse case manger is valuable resources to help you ensure that your patient gets the health services and benefits they need to make the best recovery possible. Her role is to coordinate and facilitate access to timely and appropriate health care services, and ensure continuity throughout the recovery process. Nurse role as counselor: The role of counselor assists clients in identifying and clarifying health problem and in choosing appropriate courses of action to solve this problems. A counselor is responsible for provide information, listen objectively, and be supportive, and caring. Counselors do not make decisions, they help client reach decisions that best suite them. Nurse role as care giver: Care for the patient (In caring for the patient, the nurse cares about the patient) Coordinate the care of the patient Protect the patient Teach the patient and family Advocate for the patient Nurse role as manger: A nurse manger’s role is one of leadership. A person would therefore require excellent communication skills with people of all ages. The nurse manger role requires a lot of responsibility and one must be able to accept this challenge and all the duties and responsibilities that are allocated with the skilled and professional line of work. Nurse manger’s role also involve the building of team leadership. Nurses within particular unit should be able to work well together as a team and form a uniform whole , this will ensure the success of nursing unit. Nurse role as a researcher: The nurse has many roles. Nurse researcher is very important aspect in nursing The nurse researcher must update knowledge. Apply Evidence Based Practice (EBP) Assess the agency needs Nurse role as a researcher (cot.): Choose an appropriate research question to explore Select or design data collection procedures Review and critique relevant professional literature Conduct action research study Make change in teaching practice through systematic reflection and experience Nursing Ethics: Ethics is the science that deal with principles of right and wrong, good & bad conduct, and is based on personal believes & values. Or It is how people must to act & how they must to be in relationship with others. Nurse code of ethics ‫قانون أخالق المهنة للممرضة‬ Code of ethics provides guidelines to assist the nurse in practice & own behavior. It provides a frame work for making ethical decisions Content of code of ethics: The more common contents of code of ethics. Fundamental responsibility of the nurse to promote health, prevent illness, restore health, and to alleviate suffering. Nurses provide health services to the individual, family, community & coordinate their services. It is unrestricted by considerations of nationality, race, age, sex, politics, & social status. The nurse carries personal responsibility for nursing practice and maintain competence by continual learning.
