**Self-Awareness and Self-Management** **Self-Awareness** - Is defined as an awareness of one's own personality or individuality. The term "self" often refers to yourself, myself, himself/herself, oneself and your own self. - This term refers to a person in a prime condition, as entire person or individual. - Awareness is defined as having or showing realization, participation in, commitment to and knowledge of the development of one's values. **You as You** - ***Nosce te ipsum*** is the Latin word for "know thyself." - Begin to know yourself, since the essential formula for achievement is self-analysis. **You as Filipino** - Being aware of and remaining constantly on guard against Filipino tendency towards negativism, you can eventually propel yourself into positivism. - Use your ***lakas** at **tibay ng loob*** to move away from the fatalistic ***gulong ng palad*** and **bahala na attitude**. **You as Filipino** - Begin by getting involved with your own life. *Makialam ka sa buhay mo.* Cooperate,makisama ka, by first initiating a change in yourself. - Begin without expecting instant miracles. You have got only one real friend and one worst enemy and that is yourself. - Believe in your abilities and work unyieldingly to reach your objective. **You and Your Faith** - Filipino worship is directed to towards God as a father-figure who takes care of all. - Bahala na ang Diyos signifying that Divine Providence is responsible for our destinies. Thus, whenever problems confront us, we tend to turn against God and blame Him for all our misfortunes. **Your "Self-help" Concepts** - You may or not be aware of the 'self-help' or self-improvement teachings, but if you want to be more successful, you should: - Believe in yourself - Keep your priorities straight - Take responsibility for yourself - Create your own future - Focus on what you want - Learn to visualize the outcome of your goals - Never let anyone control your destiny - Be creative - Think big - Control stress - Think positively - Set specific goals - Do everything with love **YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATION** 1. **LEADERSHIP** is the art of influencing people to get the necessary support and cooperation in community affairs and to maintain solidarity among people. 2. A **LEADER** is one who helps/facilitates communities of people, takes risks and envisions a better future for the group. Leaders are needed to make decisions, to direct community activities and to speak for the community. **VIRTUE** is defined as conformity to a standard of right and morality. It is a beneficial quality or power of a thing and thus a commendable trait or habit. **VIRTUES AS THE FOUNDATION OF LEADERSHIP** **1. PRUDENCE --** the habit which enables man to direct his actions to human life goals, knowing the right thing to do and applying it. **2. JUSTICE --** the habit of giving each one constant and perpetual will; gives stability that a person needs to work without fear and anxiety in search of happiness **3. FORTITUDE --** the habit of overcoming the difficulties and pressures of life in pursuit of goodness **4. TEMPERANCE --** the habit of bringing desires and natural inclinations of man under the control of reason **5. INDUSTRY --** the habit of working hard and working under pressure **6. LOYALTY --** the habit of remaining true to your friends and to your principles in times of difficulty **7. RESPONSIBILITY --** the habit of being accountable for one's actions, duties and obligations **8. CHEERFULNESS --** the habit of being optimistic, always seeing the bright side of things **9. GENEROSITY --** the habit of sharing the good that one has with other people **10. MAGNANIMITY --** the habit of having great ideals and ambitions of doing good **TRAITS OF LEADERSHIP** 1\. True leadership is the art of changing a group from what it is to what it ought to be. 2\. Leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency. 3\. Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. 4\. Leadership is learning to give without expecting in return. 5\. Leadership is the ability to handle uncertainty. 6\. Leadership has nothing to do with ordering people around or directing their every move. 7\. The climax of leadership is to know when to do what. **QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER** - enables people to feel and become empowered - inspires values of caring - ensures that learning and competence matter - particularly in administration creates an atmosphere where work is stimulating, challenging and fun - helps people sense of unity. - helps members to develop sense of security and trust. - displays reliability and integrity. - honest and trustworthy - thinks of ways to help members develop a set of intentions, outcomes, goals and directions. **LEADERSHIP STYLES** - Authoritarian leadership - Consultative leadership - Enabling leadership **1. AUTHORITARIAN LEADERSHIP** *A leader decides and announces it.* *A leader presents a decision but "sells it to the members."* *A leader presents a decision and invites questions for clarification* **2. CONSULTATIVE LEADERSHIP** *A leader presents a tentative decision subject to change* *A leader presents a situation, gets inputs, decides* *A leader calls on member to make a decision, but holds the veto power* **3. ENABLING LEADERSHIP** *A leader defines limits and call on members to decide* *A leader calls on members to identify limits, explore possibilities and decide* **YOUTH ORGANIZATION** - Is a collection of teams composed of young people - The success of a youth organization depends on the ability of the teams within it to work together to attain commonly held objectives - Team leaders must be concerned with developing more cohesive and cooperative relations between members and the teams **FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECTIVENESS** - Shared goals and objectives - Utilization of resources - Trust and conflict resolution - Shared leadership **BUILDING A BETTER TEAM** - Teamwork reflects camaraderie - Teamwork reflects unity - Teamwork divides the effort and multiplies the success **EFFECTIVE TEAM LEADERS** - Communicate - Open, honest and fair - Make decisions with inputs from others - Set goals and emphasize them - Create an atmosphere of growth **EFFECTIVE TEAM MEMBERS** - Support the team leader - Provide open, honest and accurate info's - View criticism as an opportunity to learn - Share ideas freely and enthusiastically - Ask one another for opinions and listen to them **DECISION MAKING** - Skills and techniques underpin most aspects of management - The art is complex, encompassing wide range of personal and interpersonal skills **DECISION MAKING APPROACHES** - **AUTHORITARIAN APPROACH** -- leader assumes the authority to make decision alone and pass them down the line for implementation - **DEMOCRATIC APPROACH** -- the responsibility for decision making is shared between leader and members of the team **DECISIONS MADE BASED ON HOW PEOPLE GET INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS** - **THE PLOP** -- the group makes a decision by not making a decision - **THE ONE-PERSON DECISION** -- this is quickly made; decision maker depends on free support implement but carrying it out alone - **THE HANDCLASP** -- one person suggests and without discussion, the matter is decided - **THE CLIQUE** - this decision is made by a small group who plans beforehand to get their way. - **THE MINORITY** -- these decisions are not consciously organized as those of the clique, but a few powerful personalities dominate the group - **THE MAJORITY VOTE** -- often the most effective way to make a decision - **THE SILENT CONSENSUS** - some groups aim at unanimous decision - **THE CONSENSUS** -- involving various possibilities after all opinions have been heard
