Has it all: Doctrine - what human beings need to know about God Sacraments – dispose us to receive salvation C. Christianity is catholic. 2. Holiness a. Spiritual perfection because of likeness unto God b. Also referred to as sanctity, saintliness, and sacredness 3. Perfection a) Imitation of Jesus Christ b) Submission to God’s will c) It is the ultimate goal of the universal call to holiness d) Our perfection will not be complete until the end of time when we will be given a resurrected, glorified body 4. Second Vatican Council a) The most recent ecumenical council b) 1962-65 c) Ecumenical: representing the worldwide church d) Ecumenical councils take place when the pope gathers all the world’s bishops to discuss and make formal statements on church doctrine, practice, or discipline 5. Christ died on the cross so you might have the possibility of eternal life. Now, Christ is living at your side each day to enlighten, strengthen, and free you. 7. Disciple From Latin verb discere, meaning “to learn” A person who accepts Christ’s message and follows him 8. Discipleship Seeking holiness by following the path and mission to which Christ calls us 1 9. Evangelization Communicating to the world the saving message of Christ (principally the kerygma) Means to carry out: Preaching Missionary activity Personal witness Media 10. Martyr Greek for “witness” Someone who courageously stands up for the truth of the Christian faith, even to the point of enduring death The act of giving up one’s life for Christ is martyrdom. 11. Rosary A popular Marian prayer Uses rosary beads Involves meditations on the mysteries of the life of Christ and his mother Mysteries: joyful, sorrowful, glorious, luminous 12. Eucharist Jesus taught that we must eat his body and drink his blood to have eternal life. Christ is present in the Eucharist by means of transubstantiation. God gives many graces through the Eucharist. We must receive the Eucharist worthily. Christ comes to us intimately in Holy Communion. Christ waits for us in the tabernacles of our churches. 13. Arianism: Denied Jesus’ divinity; he is not equal to the Father b. Docetism: Jesus merely appeared to be human c. Gnosticism: Salvation is achieved through secret knowledge d.
