MS notes Thursday, 10 October 2024 1:00 pm Multiple Sclerosis Overview First identified as a separate distinct disease in 1868 by the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. Charcot noted the “patches” of lesions in the brain and spinal cord associated with the symptoms of the disease. Affects between 2-150 people per 100,000. Mainly affects young adults (20-40 years old at onset), twice as common in women as in men. Severity and type of symptoms can range widely. Sometimes considered to be a degenerative disease of the CNS. Generally considered to be autoimmune, driven by the patient’s immune system. Types of Multiple Sclerosis – Distinct Disease Courses 1. Relapsing-Remitting MS (70-85% of initial cases). 2. Primary Progressive MS (10-15% of cases). 3. Secondary Progressive MS (>50% of RR-MS patients; average time from initial attack to progressive stage is 19 years). 4. Progressive-Relapsing MS (rare,
