Now let us to work and read about the History of Music. This is just a review of your grade 9 music. RENNAISANCE PERIOD 1400-1600 This period of music is considered as looking back to the Golden Age of Greece and Rome. During the emergence of the Middle class, renaissance music became popular as entertainment and activity for amateurs and the educated. The Roman Catholic Church influence started to decline as the new music was on the scene. Sacred music was still of great but secular music became prominent. The acapella music was also one of the highlights which Madrigal is known for. Madrigal originated from Italy and it is considered as the most important secular music of this period. The music is written and expressed in poetic text and sung during social gatherings. Some of the musical characteristics of this period are polyphonic, common voice is produced by imitation, painting in texts and music, the melodic lines move in a flowing manner, and Melodies are easier to perform because these move along a scale with a few large leaps. BAROQUE MUSIC 1685-1750 During the Baroque period, composers began to place a much greater emphasis on music’s dramatic power to express different passions and elicit emotional responses from the audience. According to Dismmorre 2017. the expression of emotions such as love, sorrow, joy, rage, and pity became the chief objective of Baroque compositions. Grandiose and elaborate ornamentation was the highlights of arts and by the musical composers. George Friedrich Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach, Claudio Monteverdi, and Antonio Vivaldi are some of the greatest composers of this time. Some techniques and changes in musical notation were also developed. For example, Major and minor tonality was created. Because of these changes and techniques, there are a lot of characteristics being observed. To name some: melodies sound elaborates and ornamental, Melodies are not easy to sing or remember, contrapuntal textures with some homophony, dynamic contrast, harpsichord, and organ are the keyboard instruments that are commonly used, the existence of new forms (binary, ternary, ground bass, fugue). CLASSICAL MUSIC 1750-1820 Classical Music is considered as “Age of Reason”. On this period Aristocracy or people believed to be superior had been an issue. Musicians and artists who influenced the arts like architecture and literature or also known as classicism. Even the economic order and social structure had been pushed forward. Also, musical form and styles had significant changes, that even instrumental music was patronized primarily by the nobility. Formality, elegance, simplicity, freed and dignified has been a standard and the highlight of this period, not just in real life scene but in music specifically. Some of the characteristics of music are: dynamics are extensively used and Alberti bass or a style of broken chord was practiced. Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig Van Beethoven are the greatest composers of this period. ROMANTIC PERIOD 1820-1910 Stressed emotion, imagination, individualism and freedom of expression are some of the description of Romantic Period. Romantic music also incorporated to nationalism. These characteristics are evident in music, art and literature of the era. Ludwig Van Beethoven was the bridge of the Classical Music to Romantic Music era. He uses expression, passion and emotions through his music. That is why other composers of this period got inspired on how he makes music out of his style. Many composers explored different styles and approaches in various instrumentation. When it comes to piano music of the romantic period, it is free from such as fantasy, rhapsody, love and nocturne. And most of the musical compositions of the era portray literature, history, emotions, and nature. QUESTIONS TO ANSWER: 1. According to Student 1 (S1) what is the importance of knowing the past? 2. What was the main highlight of the Classical Music? What’s New 20th Century Music During the 20th century, we saw the rise of distinct musical styles that is conventionally far away to classical music that we know. Impressionism, expressionism, neo-classicism, Avant-garde music, and modern nationalism are some of the new styles of this generation. Because of the musical genius and composers such as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Arnold Schoenberg, Bela Bartok, Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofieff, and George Gershwin we are being oriented and were able to hear different styles of music above mentioned. Coming from the different orientations from different nations (France, Austria, Hungary, Russia, and the United States) these set of composers gives us a ray of new concepts and styles in the 20th century. A revolution occurred in 20th Century Music listening as the radio gained popularity worldwide, and new media and technologies were developed to record, capture, reproduce and distribute music. Because music was no longer limited to concerts and clubs, it became possible for music artists to quickly gain fame nationwide and sometimes worldwide. Conversely, audiences were able to be exposed to a wider range of music than ever before, giving rise to the phenomenon of world music. Music performances became increasingly visual with the broadcast and recording of music videos and concerts. Music of all kinds also became increasingly portable. Headphones allowed people sitting next to each other to listen to entirely different performances or share the same performance. Copyright laws were strengthened, but new technologies also made it easier to record and reproduce copyrighted music illegally. These 20th-century musical styles gave us the freedom to experiment with new musical styles of our taste. With the invention of electronic mediums opened doors in exploring and broadening our concepts in making popular music that we are fund of. The mixing of different sounds, beats, and styles from different races is much evident. Using the music on different platforms of technology gave opportunities to people who love to explore and improvise their type of music. And having this kind of freedom gave us more the chance of hearing our thoughts, listening to our own, and having our own. INTRODUCING, Mr. IMPRESSIONISM and Mr. EXPRESSIONISM. OTHER MUSICAL STYLES OF 20th Century Music Primitivism The word exoticism and Ethnicism is linked to Primitivism because it uses concepts and ideas through cultures, indigenous life and sounds, and different ethnic groups. Although in visual arts it has different meanings, like Primitive paintings were created outside academic circles by the artist. The lack of educated technique is evident but it resulted in expression and more artistic intervention and vision that gave more individuality and originality to the creator. In music, Primitivism seeks ideas or images that are related to antiquity to some culture and being, that is why conventional technique is lacking. Igor Stravinsky and Bela Bartok, these two are well known proponents of this style of music. Neo-Classicism Neo-Classicism talks about the factors between Emotional excesses of the Romantic period and the violent impulses of the soul in expressionism. According to https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Neoclassical_Music Neoclassical music emerged as a reaction to romanticism with a return to the order and can be seen as a reaction against the prevailing trend of nineteenth century Romanticism to sacrifice internal balance and order in favor of more overtly emotional writing. Avant-Garde Also it was a return of balanced forms, emotional restraint and compositional process and technique. In addition, composers returned aesthetic perceptions (balance, clarity, economy and emotional restraint). Electronic music is associated with Avant-Garde. It came from the French phrase “vanguard” or describes movement or individuals at the forefront of innovation and experimentation in their fields. It deals with dimensions of sound and space. The characteristics of this music shows musical mobility and improvisation. The musical scores were not necessarily written and followed as written. John Cage an avant-garde composer quoted “That everything you do is music”. There is considerable academic debate about the origins of its application to the arts, but in popular understanding, it usually refers to anything that general audiences might consider outrageous. Modern Nationalism A 20th-century music development focused on nationalist composers and musical innovators who sought to combine modern techniques with folk materials. With the modern theories and differences, unanimously Nationalism music is a dynamic process of cultural identification with a nation and national qualities. However, in recent decades, new concepts of nationalism and the social function of music have greatly expanded the perceived spheres of nationalism in music. All genres, compositional techniques, and composers, regardless of nationalist intent, can participate in the formulation and negotiation of national unity and identity. Also, the realms of popular music and amateur music-making, as well as musical journalism and scholarship, are now considered important facets of nationalism in music.
