Culture - Behavioural orientation that is unique to particular group of people - Passed down generation to generation - “The way of life for an entire society” - Culture is learned not innate - Dynamic and constantly changing Cultural Diversity - Also known as multiculturalism - Set of characteristics that distinguishes groups within society Multiculturalism - refers to the coexistence of multiple cultures. It celebrates diversity and promotes collaboration Organizational Behavior - is the study of what people think, feel, and do in and around organizations. Three Levels of organizational behavior 1.) Individual 2.) Group 3.) Organization Why study Organizational Behavior Create a comfortable work environment Nurture a culture based on trust, not conflict More effective communications More motivated and engaged employees Create a performance and success oriented hierarchy structure Beliefs - Opinions or principles held by a person or group as being true Behaviours - reflect consciously or unconsciously held beliefs Values - are the classification of beliefs and behaviors Ethics refers to the study of moral principles or values that determine whether actions are right or wrong Benefits of workforce diversity Higher Innovation Faster Problem Solving Variety of different perspectives Better Decision Making Increased creativity Increased Profit Reduce employee turnover Higher employee engagement INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR refers to the actions, responses, reactions, and behaving ways of the individual in a particular position. MARS model of individual behavior is a model that seeks to elaborate individual behavior as a result of internal and external factors or influences combined together Employee motivation is the level of commitment, energy and innovation that a company's staff hold to put forth the necessary effort and action towards work-related activities. DIRECTION refers to the path along which people engage their effort. The second element of motivation, called INTENSITY, is the amount of effort allocated to the goal. Finally, motivation involves varying levels of PERSISTENCE, that is, continuing the effort for a certain amount of time. Employee abilities also make a difference in behavior and task performance. APTITUDE are the natural talents that help employees learn specific tasks more quickly and perform them better. LEARNED CAPABILITIES are the skills and knowledge that you currently possess COMPETENCIES is the set of demonstrable characteristics and skills that enable and improve the efficiency or performance of a job. PERSON-JOB MATCHING STRATEGIES One way to match a person’s competencies with the job’s task requirements is to select applicants who already demonstrate the required competencies. The term role perception refers to how individuals define their work role, such as how broadly they perceive it. UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFIC TASKS UNDERSTAND THE PRIORITY UNDERSTANDING THE PREFERRED BEHAVIORS OR PROCEDURES SITUATIONAL FACTORS Hygiene or Motivational factors The most widely respected model of personality traits is the five factor model (FFM) OPENNESS The characteristics of people possessing this trait are always open to new ideas, imaginative, like taking adventures and wanting to try new things. CONSCIENTIOUSNESS People high on conscientiousness tend to be organized, always plan priorly, and complete the task correctly in the set schedule. EXTRAVERSION Extraversion can be termed as the extroverts who always enjoy initiating conversations and get energized when people are around. AGREEABLENESS The characteristics of people possessing this trait are empathetic, they think about people, are kind, and ready to help others. NEUROTICISM measures emotional stability.
