Intended Learning Outcomes At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: identify the sociological perspectives about the self; demonstrate critical and reflective thinking in showing different aspects of the self; and examine yourself using Charles Horton Cooley’s Looking-glass Self Theory. 11 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Engage: Activity 1 Direction: Identify 20 traits which you believe you possess. It is also important to understand that the establishment of the “Self” based on social structures could give us a better understanding of who we are and provided reasons how our interactions can affect us a person. George Mead’s Social Self George Herbert Mead is an American Sociologist, he is considered as the Father of American pragmatism. He argued that the self is not biological but social. Self is something that is developed through social interaction. The “I” and the “Me” Mead proposes two components of the self which the person have, these are the “I” and the “Me” “Me”- is the self that results from progressive stages of role playing or role-taking and the perspective one assumes to view and analyze one’s own behavior. “I”- is the phase of the self that is unsocialized and spontaneous. It is the acting part of the self, an immediate response to other people. Mead’s Three Role-plying Stages of Self Development 1. The Preparatory Stage (Birth – 2 years old) – this stage the infant simply imitates the actions and behaviors of the people that the infant interacts with. 2. The Play Stage (2 – 6 years old) – it is the time where children begins to interact with other with which certain apply, these rules often time does not adhere to any set or standards but rather are rules that are set by the children themselves. 3. The Game Stage (6 – 9 years old) – the final stage. The child comes to see himself/herself from the perspective of other people. Charles Horton Cooley’s Looking-glass Self The looking-glass self is a social psychological concept. In this view, the self is developed as a result of one’s perceptions of other people’s opinions. For Cooley, this social self is the central element of society. Private Self, Public Self, and Collective Self Private Self – or individual self, is the cognition that involves traits, states, and behaviors. It is an assessment of the self by the self. Public Self – is the cognition concerning the generalized other’s view of the self. (Generalized Others is an organized community or social group which gives to the individual his\her unity of self – Mead) Collective Self – is the cognition concerning a view of the self that is found in memberships in social groups. 13 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Social Identity Theory The social identity theory was conceived by Henri Tajfel. It is defined as the person’s sense of who he or she is according to his or her membership to a certain group. Tajfel and Turner (1986) identified 3 Mental Processes: A. Social Categorization B. Social Identification C. Social Comparison Erving Goffman’s Presentation of Self in Everyday Life In this theory, Goffman posited the idea that as people interact with one another they are constantly engaged in impression management – a process in which people regulate and control information in social interaction. This model of social life assumes that personalities are not static because they change to suit the situation. Source: Understanding the Self by Ronald M. Corpuz, Ronan S. Estoque, Claudio V. Activity 1 Gender Age Marital Status Skin Color Religion Citizenship Economic Status Educational Background Generation Personality 18 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Read, Think, and Learn: The Self Embedded in the Culture Culture refers to customary behavior and beliefs that are passed on through enculturation (Kottak, 2008), wherein enculturation is the social process which culture is learned and transmitted. Culture is a social process that is learned and passes from generation to the next. Culture depends on images, which have a specific significance and incentive for individuals who share a culture. Cultural traditions take regular marvels, including organic desires, and transforming them, specifically headings. Everybody is cultured. Social orders are coordinated and designed through predominant monetary powers, social examples, key images and core values. Cultural mean of adjustment has been urgent in human evolution. Cultures oblige people, yet the activities of people can change cultures. Cultural Identity and National Identity Culture is derived from the Latin word cultura or cultus meaning care or culturation. Identity refers to “who the person is”, or the qualities and traits of an individual that make him/her different from others. Cultural Identity refers to the identity or feeling of belongingness to a certain culture group. Cultural Identity Theory explains why a person acts and behaves the way he or she does. It makes sense of how an individual is influenced by the cultural contexts he or she is situated in. A nation is a group of people built on the premise of shared customs, traditions, Brian Morris’s Anthropology of the Self He reiterated that the self is not an entity but a process that orchestrates an individual’s personal experience. Dialogical Self The dialogical self-theory was introduced in 1922 by Hubert Hermans. The theory regarded “self” as the “society of Mind”. He posited the idea that the self is considered as extended to significant others in the environment that populate the self as a dynamic multiplicity of I-positions in which dialogical or monological relationships may emerge. Internal I-position refers to how one functions in himself or herself External I-position refers to how one identity him/herself based on external factors Individual Self, Relational Self, and Collective Self Individual self reflects the cognitions related to traits, states, and behaviors that are stored in memory. Relational Self reflects cognitions that are related to one’s relationships. Collective Self reflects cognitions that are related to one’s group. 19 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Source: Understanding the Self by Ronald M. In the context of psychology, the self can be defined as a reflexive psychological process that starts when one identifies himself or herself as an object, followed be describing oneself as a self-concept or self-feeling, and ends with saying that the self is manifested in how one acts and presents himself or herself to others (Zhao, 2014). In this process, the self is perceived through how ones sees and understand him/herself. The psychology of studying self is about either the cognitive and affective representation of one’s identity or the subject of experience. The earliest formulation of the self in modern psychology froms the distinction between the self as I, the person knower, and the self as Me, the person that is known. William James’s Self Theory William James (1890), an American philosopher and psychologist, divided an individual’s perception of the self into two categories – “me-self” and “I-self” “me-self” – is the phenomenal self, the experienced self or the self as known. “I-self” – is the self-thought or the self-knower. Sub-categories of the Self: Material Self – is constituted by our bodies, clothes, immediate family, and home. Social Self – is based on our interactions with society and the reaction of people towards us. Spiritual Self – the most intimate self because it is more satisfying for the person that they have the ability to argue and discriminate one’s moral sensibility, conscience and indomitable will. Carl Rogers’s Self Theory Carl Rogers’ believes that the self does not exist at birth; it is developed gradually during childhood wherein one differentiates the self from non-self. Rogers considered the self as the center of experience. Real Self and Ideal Self Real self – is who an individual is, intrinsically. The real self is one’s self-image. Ideal self – is the perception of what a person would like to be or thinks he or she would be. Self-concept Self-concept is defined as the totality of complex, organized, and dynamic system of learned beliefs, attitudes, and opinions that each person holds to be true about his or her personal existence (Rogers, 1959). Aspects of Self-concept Existential self – begins when an individual recognizes his/her existence as a separate entity from others and realizes that he or she will continue to exist over a period of time and space. 26 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Three Components of Self-concept The Perceived Self – (Self-worth – how the person sees self & others sees them) The Real Self – (Self Image – how the person really is) The Ideal Self – (how the person would like to be) Donald W. Winnicott’s True Self and False Self True Self – it is the core of who you are, the original you, unshaped by the upbringing of society. False Self – is also known as the fake self, ideal self, perfect self, and pseudo self. Albert Bandura’s Agentic Theory of the Self The social cognitive theory makes use of the agentic theory of the self to make sense of the self. To be an agent means to be capable of intentionally influencing one’s own functionality and life circumstances. Four Core Properties of Human Agency: Intentionally – is manifested in how an individual forms intention with action plans and strategies to realize them. Forethought – refers to how an individual positions his/her plans in the future. Self-reactiveness – shows that agents are not only planners and forethinkers but also self-regulations. Self-reflection – signifies that people are capable of self-examining their own functioning. Source: Understanding the Self by Ronald M. Corpuz, Ronan S. Estoque, Claudio V. Intended Learning Outcomes At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: define the physical aspect of self; discuss how culture shapes the notion of beauty and how it affects the self; and appraise a movie about physical self and beauty. Read, Think, and Learn: The physical self refers to the body. It is the tangible aspect of the person that can be directly observed and examined (Singh, 2017). The physical self is defined by physical characteristics that are visible. These characteristics are the defining traits and features of the body. Sex, height, weight, complexion, hair, and facial features are among the common physical features identified when one is asked to describe another person. The physical aspect of the self does not include characteristics that are internal to the self-such as kindness, generosity, loyalty, and other similar qualities. 38 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Impact of Culture on Beauty and Body Image When is a person considered to be beautiful? Read, Think, and Learn: A person’s tangible possessions like his/her car, house, clothes, even family and friends make up his/her material self. Regardless of how much or how little a person owns materially, he/she will always strive to acquire more because material possessions are usually a reflection of a person’s success or failure. Material Self According to William James, also known as the father of American Psychology, the self is everything that an individual considers to be his/hers, not only his/her body, and material possessions but also his/her reputation and beliefs. The Role of Material Possessions on the Sense of Self and Identity Regardless of how much or how little material possessions people have, they remain valuable because these possessions are symbolic of one’s social status. Material possessions can reflect hard work and success. Normally, people tend to measure success through the amount of their material possessions. Materialism – refers to giving more importance to material possessions than intangible values. Needs versus Wants Need - is something that a person must have in order to live. Want – is something that a person desires to have but can live without. Source: Understanding the Self by Ronald M. Corpuz, Ronan S. Estoque, Claudio V. Read, Think, and Learn: This lesson explains the concept og digital self and the importance of digital technology in human activities. It also presents the implications of and the ethical issues involved in sharing personal information especially in social networks. Digital Self The digital self is the aspect of the self that is expressed or shared with others through online interactions on the internet, specifically in social networking sites. Self-Presentation and Impression Management John DeLamater and Daniel Myers (2012) cite that the self is heavily influenced by feedback from others. Self-presentation is inherent in all situations. The widespread use of online interactions has increased the opportunities to engage in self-presentation and impression management. Most people strive to create images that are positive. Nevertheless, the desire to create positive impressions and to be “liked” by others may lead to consequences that can be risky to one’s security and mental health, such as identity theft, cyberbullying, gossiping as well as anxiety and depression. The Importance of Digital Technology At present, due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we are suffering right now, the use of technology is essential worldwide for individual survival and for communication with other people. Digital technology has immensely changed the pattern or working, as well as the learning of new concepts, including communication. Innovations in mobile phones, for example, resulted in the widespread use of the internet and social networking. 77 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Impact of Online Interactions on the Self The Philippines has the fastest growing internet population in Southeast Asia. Characteristics of Learning Learning is Purposeful Learning is a Result of Experience Learning is Multifaceted Learning is an Active Process What Happens during Learning? Brain Changes When a person learns something new, the brain undergoes changes. The changes in the brain during learning are: New nerve cells may grow, and new neural networks will then be formed The strengths of existing synaptic connections changes, thus functionally changing the connectivity 9and the activity) within the existing neural networks in response to a sensory stimulus. New synapses are formed between neurons that were not connected before, thus effectively creating new networks of neurons that, when active, represent a new memory. Behavioral Changes Learning has been defined as permanent change in behavior as a result of experience. Learning requires continuity of behavioral change. 86 | P a g e City College of San Jose del Monte Understanding the Self Learning to be a Better Student The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement. The Philippine educational system is embracing outcome-based education wherein the premise of instruction is based on what the students can do, as oppose to what the students know. James Spady is considered the father of outcome-based education (OBE) asserted that, in OBE, what matters are the skills of the students. It deals with what the students can do after the program or after the lesson. It assesses the students learning through requiring the learners to perform a set of tasks. Good Study Habits To be a successful student, you must establish good study habits to learn effectively. Study habits refer to the attitudes and behaviors of students when preparing for tests or any learning assessment. Below are some ways to develop good study habits.
