The DMF provides guidance for registered nurses, enrolled nurses and midwives on: a. individual practice decisions b. expanding scope of practice, and c. when registered nurses or midwives can delegate aspects of care to others, such as other registered nurses or midwives, enrolled nurses, students and health workers. The DMF is divided into two sections. In your groups, consider 3 take home messages from each that you will share with the group Part one: Principles of decision making Take Home Messages from Part One: Principles of Decision Making Patient-Centered Care: Effective decision-making in nursing must prioritize the patient's values, preferences, and needs. Engaging patients in their care promotes better outcomes and enhances their satisfaction with the healthcare process. It’s important to involve patients in discussions about their treatment options and to respect their autonomy in making healthcare decisions. Evidence-Based Practice: Decisions should be informed by the best available evidence, integrating clinical expertise with the latest research findings. This approach helps ensure that the care provided is safe, effective, and based on scientifically validated methods, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes. It encourages nurses to stay updated with current guidelines and research in their field. Collaborative Approach: Decision-making should involve collaboration among the healthcare team, including nurses, doctors, and other professionals. Sharing insights and expertise can lead to more comprehensive care solutions. Open communication within the team fosters a culture of safety and accountability, enabling better identification of potential issues and more effective interventions. Part two: Nursing and midwifery guides to practice decisions Take Home Messages from Part Two: Nursing and Midwifery Guides to Practice Decisions Adherence to Professional Standards: Nurses and midwives must ensure that their practice decisions align with established professional standards and guidelines. These standards outline the competencies required for safe and effective care, helping practitioners to uphold quality and accountability in their work. Staying informed about these standards is crucial for maintaining professional integrity. Western Sydney University | NURS 1001 APNP 2 Ethical Considerations: Every practice decision should be evaluated through an ethical lens, considering the implications for patient rights, autonomy, and well-being. Understanding and applying ethical principles, such as beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, can guide practitioners in making decisions that respect patient dignity and promote equitable care. Reflective Practice: Continuous reflection on practice decisions is essential for professional growth and improvement. Nurses and midwives should regularly assess their experiences, decisions, and outcomes to identify areas for development. This reflective approach not only enhances individual competency but also contributes to better patient care and safety. Student registered nurses are mandated to know their scope of practice and ensure they always practice within their scope. There are several resources available to assist students with their decision making. The DMF is a tool developed by the NMBA and advocated for use by both registered nurses as well as student registered nurses. Meanwhile, it is acknowledged that student registered nurses require more detailed, specific framework to guide their and measure their practice This framework is known as Patient Safety Competency Framework Activity 2 – What is the Patient Safety Competency Framework for Nursing Students? Review the following question: In your own words explain the purpose of the Patient Safety Competency Framework for Nursing Students? Purpose of the Patient Safety Competency Framework for Nursing Students Establishing Core Competencies: The framework outlines essential skills and knowledge that nursing students must acquire to effectively recognize and manage safety risks in clinical settings. By identifying these competencies, it helps standardize what is expected from nursing education programs. Enhancing Patient Care: The primary aim of the framework is to improve the quality of care that patients receive. By focusing on safety competencies, it ensures that nursing students are equipped to make informed decisions that minimize errors and adverse events, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. Promoting a Culture of Safety: The framework encourages nursing students to adopt a mindset that prioritizes safety throughout their education and future careers. It fosters a Western Sydney University | NURS 1001 APNP 3 culture where patient safety is everyone's responsibility and where students learn the importance of reporting incidents and near misses. Supporting Evidence-Based Practice: The framework emphasizes the importance of using current research and evidence to guide practice decisions. By doing so, it prepares nursing students to rely on the best available information when making clinical choices that impact patient safety. Facilitating Lifelong Learning: The framework also highlights the need for ongoing education and development in patient safety. It prepares nursing students to continually update their knowledge and skills as healthcare practices and technologies evolve, ensuring that they remain competent in providing safe care throughout their careers.
