AIRSPACES Prepared by Capt. Louis Martin Sta. Maria ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited OBJECTIVES Ø Define airspace. Ø Enumerate the categories of airspace. Ø Enumerate and discuss the types of airspace in each category. Ø Let cadets understand the VFR weather minimums with ease. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited AIRSPACE The space above a certain geographical area. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CATEGORIES OF AIRSPACE REGULATORY NON-REGULATORY CLASS A MILITARY OPERATIONS AREA CLASS B WARNING AREA CLASS C ALERT AREA CLASS D CONTROLLED FIRING AREA CLASS E RESTRICTED AREA PROHIBITED AREA ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited REGULATORY AIRSPACES ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CLASS A AIRSPACE CONTROLLED Vertical Dimension: 18000 ft. MSL up to and including FL600. Lateral Dimension: n/a Strictly IFR. Mach 1 speed limit. Requirements: Ability to fly IFR. ATC Clearance. Two-way radio communication. Mode-C transponder and ADS-B out. DME required above FL240. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CLASS B AIRSPACE CONTROLLED Usually surrounds the nation’s busiest airports. Vertical Dimension: SFC up to 10 000 ft. MSL. Lateral Dimension: up to 30 NM 250 knots speed limit below 10 000 ft. MSL. Requirements: Atleast PPL holder. ATC Clearance. Two-way radio communication. Mode-C transponder and ADS-B out. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CLASS C AIRSPACE CONTROLLED Exists at large airports that are less busy than Class B. Can have a primary airport and satellite airports. Inner core dimensions: SFC up to 4000 ft. AGL, 5 NM radius. Outer core dimensions: 1200 ft. AGL up to 4000 ft. AGL, 10 NM radius. Surface up to 4000 ft. AGL, 20 NM radius. (Above the primary airport). 250 knots speed limit below 10 000 ft. MSL. 200 knots speed limit below 2500 ft. AGL within 4 NM radius. Requirements: Two-way radio communication. Mode-C transponder and ADS-B out. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CLASS D AIRSPACE CONTROLLED Just like Class C, but not as busy. Approach and Departure Control aren’t mandatory (but most has it). Vertical Dimension: SFC up to 2500 ft. AGL. Lateral Dimension: Typically 4NM but can be 2NM- 7NM, depending on the volume of IFR traffic. If Class D is underneath Class B or C, it extends up to the floor of the airspace above. 250 knots speed limit below 10 000 ft. MSL. 200 knots speed limit below 2500 ft. AGL within 4 NM radius. Requirement: Two-way radio communication. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CLASS E AIRSPACE CONTROLLED Any controlled airspace that’s not A, B, C, or D. The “Everywhere” airspace. No defined vertical limits. Requirements: None for VFR. Two-way radio communication for IFR. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CLASS G AIRSPACE UNCONTROLLED Airspace that’s not A, B, C, D, or E. Uncontrolled ”SEE & AVOID” Requirement: None ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited RESTRICTED AREA SPECIAL USE Contains hazardous military activities that can be somewhat invisible. Begins from SFC up to specified altitude. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited PROHIBITED AREA SPECIAL USE Used for national security. Starts from SFC up to specified altitude. No permission is granted. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited NON-REGULATORY AIRSPACES ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited MILITARY OPERATIONS AREA SPECIAL USE Dedicated for military training. Separates military training activities from IFR traffic. VFR traffic doesn’t need any permission to enter but advisory is necessary. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited WARNING AREA SPECIAL USE Similar to restricted areas, but is beyond a 3-mile limit from international or domestic coastlines. Warns non-participating aircraft of potential danger. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited ALERT AREA SPECIAL USE Informs pilots regarding a high volume of traffic due to flight training and other unusual activities. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited CONTROLLED FIRING AREA SPECIAL USE Contain activities from which when not done in a controlled environment, can be hazardous. Similar to restricted and warning areas. Deploys a spotter aircraft. ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited OTHER AIRSPACES Airport Advisory Areas Military Training Routes (MTR) Temporary Flight Restrictions ”Other airspace” refer to the majority of remaining airspace. Parachute Jump Areas Published VFR Routes Terminal Radar Service Areas National Security Areas ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited VFR WEATHER MINIMUMS ALIAC PROPERTY Unauthorized Reproduction & Dissemination is prohibited SUMMARY CHECKLIST Ø Define airspace.
