DEPARTMENT OF NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND MARINE ENGINEERING A.Y. 2024 – 2025, First Semester COURSE CODE: ENVI Environmental Engineering Module 1 INTRODUCTION Hey Future Naval Architects! Welcome to our first module for the course Environmental COURSE MODULE Science and Engineering. In this module, you will be introduced to the importance of the study on Environmental Science and Engineering as well as its scope and its effects to the Maritime industry. We will be discussing the Environment; its concept and components together with the concept of ecological balance in nature. We will also encounter discussions on overexploitation and sustainable development. Intended Learning Outcome/s At the end of this Module, you will be able to: Demonstrate students understanding of the concept of environment through a reflection paper. Cite the three (3) types of environments based on natural composition. Distinguish the relationship between Environmental Science and Engineering to the maritime industry. STARTING ACTIVITY Do you happen to observe a glass of water in two different environments? If your answer is a “No”, then this is your chance to do so. All you need is a little work of your imagination. Imagine having a glass full of water. You are to expose this glass of water to two extremely opposite conditions – hot and cold. At 8:00 A.M. you are to put that glass of water inside the freezer. When the clock strikes 12:00 noon, you should expose the same glass of water outside under the scorching heat of the sun. o What are your observations? o Is there any significant difference as to the phase of the water inside the glass? How do you think is this possible? YOUR THOUGHTS MATTER! Try to answer the questions above in a clean sheet of paper. You may write as many ideas as possible. Topic 1 – Environmental Engineering Environmental Engineering is a discipline which was derived from the combination of the concepts of Engineering, Public Health, Ecology, and Ethics. This course basically connects the importance of Environmental Science to the advancement of the Engineering industries. ENVIRONMENT This simply refers to everything that surrounds an object – living or COURSE MODULE non-living. This includes all of the materials, forces, ideal, and conditions which affects an individual’s well-being. An individual’s environment is considered as one’s life support system. It provides all the vital items needed for sustaining life. All interactions on the environment greatly affect an organism’s survival and health. It is said that every organism is a product of two things – its genotype and its phenotype. GENOTYPE PHENOTYPE Genetic make-up; heredity Environmental make-up Since the environment covers a broad discipline, it has been divided into types – based on proximity and based on natural composition. TYPES OF ENVIRONMENT (PROXIMITY) Micro - environment Macro - environment *MICRO - ENVIRONMENT - this is the environment that directly and regularly affects an object. It is the environment that immediately influences an object’s performance and decision- making. *MACRO - ENVIRONMENT - this is the environment that indirectly and distantly affects an object. This environment includes the uncontrollable factors and external forces such as economic, demographic, technological, natural, social and cultural, legal and political influences. TYPES OF ENVIRONMENT (Natural Composition) COURSE MODULE Terrestrial (LAND) Aquatic (WATER) Aerial (AIR) COMPONENTS OF AN ENVIRONMENT PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT refers to the abiotic factors (non-living things) BIOGICAL ENVIRONMENT refers to the biotic factors (living things) SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT refers to moral, cultural, and emotional forces which influences the life and behaviour of an individual.
