WCC AERONAUTICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT North Manila Campus I [email protected] MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO DOMESTIC TOURISM TOURISM (UNWTO) Tourism is a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes. These people are called visitors (which may be either tourists or excursionists; residents or non-residents) and tourism has to do with their activities, some of which involve tourism expenditure. DOMESTIC TOURISM Domestic tourism can be described as tourism involving residents of one country traveling within their own country. It does not involve the crossing of international borders at entry points. DOMESTIC TOURISTS Tourists who travel within their own country. Domestic tourists are ten times as many as international tourists as a group spend seventh times the amount spent by latter. (source: WTO) The Motivation for Travel Why do people travel? THE NEED TO ESCAPE OR CHANGE Travel provides a momentary break from the humdrum of our daily lives. We forget about our jobs, our classes, and all other responsibilities. TRAVEL FOR EDUCATION The search for knowledge and truth is inherent in every individual. Travel offers opportunity to satisfy urge to learn. SPORTS PURPOSES Interest in sports either as participant or spectator is attracting large segments of the population. NEED FOR SOCIAL CONTACT Much travel grows out of the social nature of people. They need contact and communication with others. CULTURAL EXPERIENCE Experiencing how other people live and fostering international understanding are some of the reasons to satisfy curiosity about other culture, lifestyles, and places. Travel to a poor country can provide the traveler with a feeling of superiority. Some just wants to boast. TRAVEL FOR BUSINESS Business travel is travel undertaken for work or business purposes, as opposed to other types of travel, such as for leisure purposes or regularly commuting between one's home and workplace. TRAVEL FOR PERSONAL VALUES Many people are urged to travel to satisfy personal values and as the search for, spiritual experience, patriotism, and wholesomeness. DOMESTIC TOURISM VS INTERNATIONAL TOURISM DOMESTIC TOURISM Domestic tourism can be described as tourism involving residents of one country traveling within their own country. INTERNATIONAL TOURISM ‘International tourism is the act of travelling to another country other than where you live for no more than one year for purposes of leisure or businesses. The waters around, between, and connecting the islands of the archipelago, regardless of their breadth and dimensions, form part of the internal waters of the Philippines. MAP OF THE PHILIPPINES The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia. It is situated in the western Pacific Ocean, and consists of about 7,640 islands, that are broadly categorized under three main geographical divisions from north to south: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
