Milbentel Milbemycin oxime (MBO) and praziquantel (PZQ) MILBENTEL IS A BROAD-SPECTRUM PARASITICIDE THAT EXHIBITS EXCELLENT EFFICACY AGAINST BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PARASITES, PARTICULARLY NEMATODES AND ARTHROPODS. ITS MECHANISM OF ACTION INVOLVES BINDING TO SPECIFIC HIGH-AFFINITY SITES ON THE TARGET PARASITE CELLS MILBEMYCIN OXIME (MBO) AND PRAZIQUANTEL (PZQ) HAVE A BROAD SPECTRUM OF BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY AND ARE COMMONLY USED TO TREAT THE PARASITIC INFECTION IN THE VETERINARY CLINIC. Mibemycine Mode of Action It works by binding to specific sites on parasite cells, increasing the release of inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA and preventing nerve signal transmission. This leads to neuro-paralysis and eventual death of the parasites. Milbemycin oxime has rapid absorption, reaching peak plasma concentration in 1-2 hours, and a half-life of 1.6 days. Praziquantel Mode of Action Praziquantel is effective against tapeworms. It impairs the function of the parasite’s sucker and stimulates movement of the worm. These actions cause dislodgement of the parasite’s attachment to the intestinal tract and allow it to be eliminated in the feces (stool). Uses of Milbemycin/Praziquantel for Dogs Milbemycin is a potent microfilariacidal drug, meaning it can kill the microscopic offspring of heartworms. Microfilaria circulate in the blood of infected dogs and are typically treated after killing the adult heartworm parasite with another drug Milbemycin is one of the drugs veterinarians use to kill the microfilaria, as there are no drugs yet approved for this purpose by the FDA. This represents another extra-label use of this drug. Praziquantel is a type of medication called an anthelmintic, meaning that it treats parasitic worms. Praziquantel is effective in the treatment of tapeworms. Milbental helps Treat and control gastrointestinal worms: Roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) Whipworm (Trichuris vulpis) Hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense) Tapeworm infections (Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus granulosus) And, if given monthly: Prevent heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) Milbental is used to control Hookworm,Round Worm and certain Whipworm and Tapeworm infections in dogs and cats. The drug is highly effective in the prevention of Canine heartworm disease heartworm disease.
