Basic components of Anesthesia machine and advanced features in Anesthesia Components workstation: of a basic anesthesia machine An anesthesia machine is used to generate and mix medical gases like oxygen or air and anesthetic agents for the purpose of inducing and maintaining system anesthesia in patients. consists of 1-The basic anesthetic Source of oxygen (O2) – 2-O2 flowmeter 3-delivery Vaporizer. 4-Patient Breathing Circuit (tubing, connectors and valves) 5-Scavenging System The Boyle′s machinehas been the most frequently used anesthesia. This is a continuous-flow anesthesia machine, which is designed to provide a specific supply of medical gases mixed with a specific concentration of anesthetic vapor and deliver this continuously to the patient at a specific pressure and flow. When necessary, mechanical ventilation could be used depending on However, with basic anesthesia machines, the following types of issues were faced: 1-Higher degree of wastage of gases and anesthetic agents. 2-Machines were completely mechanical systems with semi- open circuits and high fresh gas flow. 3-There were multiple connections, prone to disconnection, misconnection, kinking, leakage or obstruction. 4-Accuracy of flow meters was poor. 5-There were no performance feedback mechanisms such as alarms. 6-Mechanical ventilation burdened the anesthetist especially in case of more critical patients. 7-Accuracy of anesthesia delivery and efficiency of the system was low. Developments in anesthesia machine Subsequently anesthesia machine was developed with a view to significantly improve patient safety and efficiency of the machine. They included additional components and features with the intention to: 1-Improve accuracy of gas and anesthetic mix delivered to patient 2- Reduce leakage 3-asisted ventilation instead of manual ventilation – 4-Patient monitoring for multiple parameters 5-Breathing Circuits with Circle.
