Linguistics (LIN3BB3) Sociolinguistics 2024 Major Summative assessment Applying CDA Due Monday 21 October Write 4 cohesive paragraphs (1000-words, not point form) in which you analyse the text “Chris Brown-Live in Johannesburg” using Fairclough’s model of Critical Discourse Analysis (the three dimensions of discourse). Ensure that you include the following: 1. Identifying how the text shapes and is shaped by the broader sociopolitical context This is Box 1 (the social analysis) Questions to consider: What are the socio-historical conditions that shape this text (the context)? What has/is happening in South Africa/the world for this text to emerge? 2. Identifying the discourses operating in the text and how they position the reader This is Box 2 (production and reception of the text) Questions to consider: Production How was the text produced? When was the text written? Where was it published? Who produced it? For what purpose? Who chose the images? Does the text conform to the genre or not? What assumptions does the writer make about the reader? Reception What is the profile of the target market? Who is the ideal reader/consumer of the text? 1 What reading positions are on offer for the reader/consumer of the text? What purposes might readers/consumers have in reading the text? Is a reader/consumer inclined to read with or against the text? 3.
