LITERATURE AND CINEMA UNIT II CAMERA MOVEMENT AND FRAMING:- The variance of camera angles in filmmaking are used to help enhance the narrative, the theme, and the overall mood of the film. Cinematographers usually make a conscious choice as to how each scene is shot. By doing so, they strive to convey the overall message of their film through each individual frame making how the camera is angled in each scene, of utmost importance. In filmmaking there are various types of camera angles that can assist you in pushing forth your intended narrative goal for your film, everything from basic to advanced camera shots. Basic camera shots are those that refer to the indication of subject size within the frame. There are three different types of basic camera shots which include: the close-up, medium shot, and the long shot. 1. Close-up A close-up shot is a shot taken of a person or object at a close range, in order to capture the minute details of the subject. This shot is tightly framed and takes up most of the screen, as it is usually used to frame a character‟s face in order for the audience to see what type of emotion is being conveyed. In addition to serving as a tool used to evoke a character‟s emotional state of mind, the close up shot is also used to reveal details or information about objects or the setting the film is set in. For example, close-up shots are often used to indicate to the audience that they should pay attention to a certain motif or symbol that is being carried throughout the film. 2. Medium Shot A medium shot, or waist shot, indicates that it was captured at a medium distance from the subject. It is often used for back and forth dialogue within a scene as it allows the viewer to have a solid view of each character within a film. This shot is known as the „sweet spot‟ shot, as it allows for both the details of your subject to be seen in addition to the surrounding setting the scene is taking place in. As a result, using a medium shot can help the viewer depict the body language of the characters in the film and how they are interacting with the environment around them. 3. Long Shot The long shot, also known as the wide shot, is often times used as an establishing shot in a film, as it normally sets the scene and the character‟s place within it. This type of camera shot, shows the full length of the subject while also including a large amount of the surrounding area of the film setting. Some of the most recognizable and iconic scenes in movies, are those that were shot as a long shot. Furthermore, when filming a movie solely from a distance that includes only long shots, it can give a sense of separation between the film itself and the audience. For example the 2019 Oscar winning film, Roma, was solely filmed in a series of long shots. This film technique causes the audience to feel isolated and like they are only allowed to be on-lookers into the story being presented to them, rather than being immersed in the narrative being told. Extreme Close-Up An extreme close-up shot, is when the surface area of the frame is filled by a subject‟s face. In other words, the subject is tightly framed, or shown in a relatively large scale, causing their face to be cropped within the frame. This type of shot is often referred to a choker as well, which is when a shot is framed just above the eyes and right below the mouth. Extreme close-ups are a powerful way to convey the emotion that your subject is feeling, without the need of the character saying much. Much like the use of a regular close-up shot, an extreme close-up can be used to guide the viewer‟s eyeline and show them an object or motif that is pivotal to the narrative of the film. Extreme Long Shot Taking the long shot one step further, the extreme long shot, or extreme wide shot, is when the view is so far from the subject that he/ she isn‟t necessarily the focus anymore, but rather the surrounding area is. Also used as an establishing shot within a film, the extreme long shot, is designed to show the audience where the action is taking place. Furthermore, an extreme long shot can also be used to demonstrate the scale of what is going on in a scene. This type of shot is often used in war-type films, as they allow for a lot of the setting to be seen at once. Although close-up, medium, and long shots are the three pillars of basic camera shots, there are multiple variations of each shot that you can use in order to blend the effects of the different shots. For example, a medium close-up combines the effects and distance of framing of both a close-up and medium shot-- the same would go with a medium long shot, and so on. Advanced camera shots, are those that indicate camera angle and placement, and are often used to affect the mood or narrative of the film, rather than indicate size and spatial awareness. 1. High-Angle A high-angle shot is a cinematography technique where the camera points down on the subject from above. This type of shot is used to make the subject or object below seem vulnerable, powerless, or weak. This camera angle is most commonly used in horror movies to indicate a sense of entitlement the camera has over the subject below. Other messages a high angle can convey include: danger, depression, and shock. When using a high angle shot this causes the audience to have a subjective camera view by asserting themselves to have the viewpoint of the person in „power‟. Additionally, a high camera angle shot can also provide an overview of the scene itself, which allows the viewer to get a better understanding of where the setting of the film is taking place-- possibly giving them a new perspective of how they view it. 2. Low-Angle A low-angle shot is when the camera is positioned low on the vertical axis, below the level of the eyeline, and looks up at an object or subject above. This camera angle evokes a psychological effect by making the subject above, which the camera is angled at, look strong and powerful. In addition, the use of a low angle shot can make the „hero‟ of your film seem vulnerable and cause the viewer to have a relatable feeling to a character that usually seems unstoppable. Another common way this angle is used, is to increase the perceived height of an object-- as when something is filmed from a low angle is causes it to appear quite larger than it actually is. 3. Over the Shoulder The over the shoulder shot, is most commonly used in film when two or more characters are talking to each other in conversation. This type of shot is used to establish eyeline of where each character in the scene is looking, and is most commonly framed through a medium or close-up shot. This type of shot can also be used to indicate to the viewer that a specific character in the film sees something that the other characters might not yet see. For example by playing with the depth of field in your scene, you can draw the attention of your viewer to look at something in the distance that a character is witnessing first hand. In this case, a great depth of field would be used by causing the foreground to be blurry, and the background to be in focus. 4. Bird’s Eye The bird‟s eye view shot, or an aerial view shot, is when the camera is located up above, overhead, capturing the action going on below. In today‟s day and age, these types of shots are most commonly captured with a drone in order to be able to get the full view of what is happening down below. In various different types of cinematic works, bird‟s eye shots are used as establishing shots to give context of where the setting of the film is, in addition to being used as transition shots to show what exactly is going on in a setting from an aerial view. These types of shots are commonly used in films where the location each scene plays a pivotal role in the narrative. However, despite being able to capture this type of shot on a drone, it is also possible to capture a bird‟s eye shot from the top of a structure or building, such as a bridge or skyscraper. 5. Dutch Angle/Tilt The Dutch angle/tilt is more of a stylistic approach to cinematography. In order to execute this, you must tilt your camera to one side, which results in a frame that is not level. This type of camera angle is used mostly to create a dramatic effect within a film and can evoke a series of different emotions. The Dutch angle can heighten psychological distress and tension, which in turn, creates a cinematic environment that creates suspense and a sense of thrill. Additionally, filming a scene in this angle can make your audience feel disoriented, uneasy, and sometimes even a sense of drunkenness. These advanced camera shots, or angles, are used in film to convey an effect or emotion rather than exemplify a sense of space. Before filming, cinematographers will write out their shot list in order to plan how each scene of their film should be shot. When directing your next cinematic masterpiece, be sure to sprinkle in a few of these camera angles in order to help convey the message of your narrative. MISE-EN-SCENE:- Whether audiences realize it or not, there are many elements in plays and in movies that help guide a viewer‟s attention. Mise en scène, is a term used to describe the setting of a scene in a play or a film. It refers to everything placed on the stage or in front of the camera—including people. In other words, mise en scène is a catch-all for everything that contributes to the visual presentation and overall “look” of a production. When translated from French, it means “placing on stage.” Mise en scène creates a sense of place for the audience whether they realize it or not. It does so by using: 1. Actors: Actors, their performances, and their performance styles are crucial parts of mise en scène. When an actor is on screen, they‟re typically the focal point, so their presence carries a lot of weight for the overall look of the story. 2. Location: The location of the scene sets the mood and supports the action. For example, in a scene in which a man proposes to his girlfriend, a domestic setting sets a completely different tone than a public one. 3. Set design: Set design refers to everything the audience sees within a particular scene. These details help build out the world of the location and add even more context to the story. If it‟s a dorm room, are there books and notebooks on the desk to indicate studying? Or are there pizza boxes and red cups to indicate a party? 4. Lighting: Lighting is often the tool that conveys mood most clearly. High-key lighting, often used in musicals and romantic comedies, relies on hard light to minimize shadows. Low-key lighting, often used in horror movies, features a high-contrast lighting pattern to both brighten and darken parts of the frame. 5. Shot blocking and camera placement: Blocking is working with performers to figure out their body positions, gestures, and movements on stage. In cinema, blocking also involves working out the placement and movements of the camera, and can impact the lighting, set design, and more. Both shot blocking and camera placement are effective tools that convey things like characters‟ status and relationships to the audience. 6. Composition: Composition is the deliberate selection of frames and camera angles that make up a shot. Manipulating composition can accentuate the emotional themes of the story and communicate a sense (or lack) of meaning to the audience. 7. Depth of space: The depth of space is the distance between people, props, and scenery, both in relation to one another and the camera. Much like shot blocking, it can tell the audience a lot about the tone of the scene and the status of the characters. Is the space shallow or deep? Does this accurately capture the truth of the narrative? 8. Film stock: The film stock refers to the appearance of the movie on the screen. Is it in black and white, or color? Is the film fine-grain, or grainy? Each tells a different story. 9. Costumes: Costumes are the clothes actors wear and how they‟re tailored to fit them. For costumes to be effective, a costume designer must know which colors look right on a character, and then reconcile this with the colors suited to the actor playing the part and the color palette of the production design. 10. Hair and makeup: Hair and makeup are the physical touches that help actors transform into their characters, such as prosthetics, blood, or aging techniques. Like costumes, hair and makeup are fundamental ingredients in the story being told. The mise en scène of a theater or film production is collaboration among dozens of professionals. It‟s determined by the director with the help of the following:  Cinematographer  Production designer  Prop master  Location manager  Gaffer  Visual effects supervisor  Costume designer  Makeup artists  Hairdressers But in many ways, mise en scène is not a production term. While the director and their crew are aware of the elements that contribute to a project‟s mise en scène, the actual term is more often used in film studies and film criticism when discussing how or why a particular scene works. n the 1950s, film critics and the French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma began using the term mise en scène when reviewing movies. However, because there is no singular definition of mise en scène, its usage varies. André Bazin, a co-founder of Cahiers du Cinéma and an expert in Italian Neorealism, argued that as film technology became more advanced, editing became less important. He and his colleagues valued the components of mise en scène more than good editing, as mise en scène afforded directors more opportunities to be artistic. Thus, directors began using long takes to leverage the impact of mis en scène. Here are some examples of mise en scène in film. Some of the most famous and well-executed are:  Citizen Kane: During a flashback to Charles Kane‟s childhood, director Orson Welles was deliberate with composition and depth of space. He placed Kane outside playing in the snow, visually between the adults debating his future. Welles also employed deep focus—a term used to describe when everything in the frame is in focus at once—to guide the viewer‟s attention.  The Graduate: Director Mike Nichols cleverly played with costuming as part of the film‟s mis en scène. When we see Mrs. Robinson at the Taft Hotel, she‟s wearing a fur animal-print coat, which reinforces her role as a predator.  Amélie: Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet used production design to communicate traits about Amélie‟s character. Her warm and whimsical bedroom establishes her in the audience‟s mind as a positive, playful person. DÉCOR, MAKEUP, COSTUME AND PROPS:- In filmmaking, every detail matters, and the visual elements of decor, makeup, costumes, and props play a pivotal role in shaping the narrative and enhancing the overall cinematic experience. These components contribute not only to the aesthetic appeal of a film but also to its storytelling, character development, and emotional resonance. 1. Decor Decor encompasses the set design and the overall environment in which the story unfolds. It establishes the film‟s tone and atmosphere, helping to immerse the audience in the world of the characters. Thoughtfully designed sets can evoke specific emotions, reflect the historical context, or signify a character‟s psychological state. For example, a dilapidated room may convey despair, while a lavish ballroom can evoke grandeur and celebration. Attention to detail in decor helps ground the story in reality and enhances the believability of the narrative. 2. Makeup Makeup is essential in portraying characters authentically and can significantly impact the viewer's perception. It is not just about beautification; it is a powerful tool for transformation. Special effects makeup can create realistic injuries, aging effects, or fantastical creatures, while subtle makeup choices can highlight a character's emotions or social status. For instance, a character undergoing a traumatic experience may exhibit signs of fatigue or distress through makeup, making their journey more relatable and poignant. Ultimately, makeup enhances character authenticity and helps convey the film's themes. 3. Costumes Costumes are crucial for establishing a character‟s identity, background, and evolution throughout the film. They communicate information about a character‟s socio-economic status, personality, and even their relationships with others. A well-designed costume can symbolize a character‟s internal struggle or growth; for instance, a character transitioning from a modest outfit to a more extravagant one may signify a shift in their self-perception or societal role. Additionally, costumes play a vital role in period films, providing historical context and authenticity. When costumes align with the narrative and setting, they enhance the audience's immersion and connection to the characters. 4. Props Props are the tangible items that characters interact with, and they often carry significant symbolic weight within the story. A prop can be a narrative device that advances the plot, reveals character traits, or signifies thematic elements. For example, a seemingly innocuous object, like a letter or a piece of jewelry, can become a focal point of tension or conflict. The thoughtful selection and placement of props can also enhance visual storytelling, providing hints or foreshadowing elements without the need for dialogue. In conclusion, decor, makeup, costumes, and props are integral to the art of filmmaking. They work synergistically to create a rich visual tapestry that supports the narrative and deepens audience engagement. By meticulously crafting these elements, filmmakers can transport viewers into the heart of the story, making each character's journey more compelling and relatable. Ultimately, the success of a film often hinges on how effectively it utilizes these visual components to enhance storytelling and evoke emotions. COMEDY:- Since the early days of cinema, comedy has been one of its most popular and successful genres. A good comedy has lots of scenes with funny characters or funny situations that make us laugh. Characters can be funny if they're clever and say or do witty things, or if they're socially inept and say or do embarrassing things, or if they're not very clever and they say and do stupid things. Scenes can be funny if something unexpected or shocking happens or if something embarrassing or ridiculous happens. In early silent movies a form of visual comedy called slapstick was often used. Comical slapstick actions like slapping, slipping and falling over had been used in live theatre for centuries before they were used in silent films like Harold Lloyd's Safety Last, Charlie Chaplin's The Kid and Buster Keaton's stunt-filled comic adventure The General. Many later film-makers have also used visual comedy. French film-maker Jacques Tati created complex sight gags that were as perfectly timed as a ballet dance and M. Hulot's Holiday, Mon Oncle and Playtime are now regarded as some of the best comedies ever made. American film-maker Woody Allen also used visual comedy in films like Bananas and Sleeper, although in later films he focused on spoken comedy more than visual comedy. Like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Jacques Tati and Woody Allen wrote, directed and starred in their own films, and these four artists are now seen by many as being among the greatest comedy film-makers of all time. After it became possible to use sound in films in the early 1930s, American screwball comedies became very popular. These films were often about smart women getting what they wanted at a time when men had the power to control nearly every aspect of a woman's life. In screwball comedies this "battle of the sexes" was part of a farce full of gags and witty banter. A farce is a comedy about a ridiculous or improbable situation, and slapstick farces like the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera and W.C. Fields' The Bank Dick were as popular as screwball farces in the 30s and 40s. A farce in which we see carefully planned robberies and murders go terribly wrong is called a caper. British capers of the 40s and 50s like Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Ladykillers set the pattern for later capers like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, A Fish Called Wanda, The Big Lebowski and Snatch. One of the darkest and funniest capers is Fargo by the Coen Brothers in which a car salesman plans the kidnapping of his wife. Fargo finds comedy not only in the failed kidnapping, but also in the failure of a business and the failure of a marriage. Films that find humour in these and other serious topics like war, illness and death are often called black comedies. There are also films that poke fun at particular movie genres by copying their style and adding humour to the mix. These movies are called parodies or "spoofs" and some of the funniest include Airplane!, a disaster movie spoof starring Leslie Nielson, and Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks' farcical parody of the cowboy-filled Western. Also popular are detective movie spoofs like A Shot in the Dark with Peter Sellers and The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad! with Leslie Nielson, spy movie spoofs like the Austin Powers movies and 2015's Spy, and parodies of the horror genre like Young Frankenstein, Ghostbusters, Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead. Movies that tell funny stories about teenagers and their lives are called teen comedies, and those that show the humour of teen life without making fun of teenagers include the 1988 movie Hairspray directed by John Waters, the 1998 high-school comedy Rushmore directed by Wes Anderson, and a very original 2011 Japanese teen comedy directed by Sion Sono called Love Exposure. Many of these movies are about teenage love and romance, but movies about the same topics in relation to adults belong to a different genre called romantic comedy or "rom com". Romantic comedies show the funny side of sexual attraction, dating, falling in love, getting married, and so on. Some of the funniest comedies ever made have been spoofs of documentaries or satires that look like serious documentaries. These films are called mockumentaries and they often include interviews with what seem to be, or sometimes are, real people in the real world. Some of the most popular mockumentaries include This is Spinal Tap which documents the career of a rock group, Waiting for Guffman about an amateur theatre group, and Best in Show which looks at the world of competitive dog shows. DRAMA:- Drama Films are serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature. A dramatic film shows us human beings at their best, their worst, and everything in-between. Each of the types of subject-matter themes have various kinds of dramatic plots. Dramatic films are probably the largest film genre because they include a broad spectrum of films. Dramatic themes often include current issues, societal ills, and problems, concerns or injustices, such as racial prejudice, religious intolerance (such as anti-Semitism), drug addiction, poverty, political unrest, the corruption of power, alcoholism, class divisions, sexual inequality, mental illness, corrupt societal institutions, violence toward women or other explosive issues of the times. These films have successfully drawn attention to the issues by taking advantage of the topical interest of the subject. Although dramatic films have often dealt frankly and realistically with social problems, the tendency has been for Hollywood, especially during earlier times of censorship, to exonerate society and institutions and to blame problems on an individual, who more often than not, would be punished for his/her transgressions. The critical reception of drama films often hinges on their ability to resonate emotionally with audiences and critics alike, as well as their artistic merit and social relevance. Critics play a key role in interpreting and evaluating these films, considering aspects such as screenplay quality, directorial vision, performance depth, and technical excellence. Films such as La La Land (2016) and The Shape of Water (2017) have achieved both critical and awards circuit success, showcasing the genre‟s ability to blend artistic innovation with emotional storytelling. These accolades not only affirm the films‟ artistic achievements but also spotlight the genre‟s enduring appeal and cultural significance. The landscape of drama films is rich with works that have left an indelible mark on cinema. Orson Welles‟ Citizen Kane (1941), with its innovative narrative structure and deep exploration of ambition and loss, is often cited as one of the greatest films of all time. Likewise, the works of Akira Kurosawa, such as Ikiru (1952), have been praised for their profound humanism and storytelling depth. More recently, films like Moonlight (2016) have been lauded for their nuanced exploration of identity, sexuality, and human connection. These films, among others, underscore the diversity and depth of the drama genre, highlighting the creativity and insight of filmmakers who have pushed the boundaries of storytelling and cinematic expression. As the drama genre continues to evolve, it remains a vital medium for exploring the complexities of life and the human spirit. Through its focus on character, narrative, and emotional depth, drama offers a unique window into the diverse experiences that shape our world, reflecting our struggles, triumphs, and the enduring quest for meaning and connection in an ever-changing society. Moving beyond the foundational elements and notable contributions, the drama film genre significantly impacts culture and society, acting as a reflective and sometimes provocative mirror. It not only entertains but also educates, challenges, and inspires audiences worldwide, fostering empathy and understanding across diverse contexts. Drama films include social problem dramas, films about mental illness, films about alcoholism, race relations and civil rights dramas, youth and generational conflict, courtroom dramas, political dramas etc. SUSPENSE:- The suspense films have already existed even way back in the 1900‟s. This genre has also helped the popular Suspense filmmakers to attain the crowning point of their professions in creating cinematic masterpieces in the suspense classification. The elements of these films comprises of crime investigations, abduction cases, and any anxiety-driven occurrences that stimulates the fascination and curiosity and feeds the fancy of the film viewers. The eerie situation in a suspense film that is represented by a very restful panorama indicates a foreboding onslaught of a very horrible proceeding. Suspense films open a portal to the audience and give them a chance to plunge and take a closer look into the world of deception, misconduct, deviousness and pretense. In Suspense films there are also some cases that the entire story plot and the characterization of the lead actor and his nemesis are being reversed and interchanged, vice-versa. These films challenge the mental capacity of the audiences and throwing their imaginations into a mind-blowing game of endless guesses. Suspense films ensure that each and every dramatis persona can likely be a perpetrator in the end. The best examples of the Suspense Films are the 1954 film Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock, the 1960 film Psycho also by Alfred Hitchcock, the 2007 film The Mist by Frank Darabont, the 2007 film The Orphanage by Juan Antonio Bayona. The essential aspects in a suspense film are the film viewer‟s emotions, worries, forthcoming adrenaline rush and spiraling menace. The aim of the suspense filmmakers is to make the film audience to think whether or not the lead character be successful in his target endeavor. In that manner, the spectators will have a realization on what will be waiting in store for the suspense film characters. It is one of the methods of the filmmakers of making the film viewers deeply engrossed with the film. The filmmaker does not want to give any room for his film to stray off- track that is why the filmmakers keeps on infusing entwining twists to its already impregnable twists on the plot. This is for the intention of keeping the interests of the audience to reach the very own climax of their mental capacity of discerning what they are watching on the screen. In the discourse of the Suspense films, there is one filmmaker who always comes to mind. Alfred Hitchcock has been a notoriously prevalent name in the realm of the suspense films. His masterpiece has depicted suspense films with undertones of his specialized ammunition typified as amusement and mental and emotional strain. He was able to hit a flawless string of monumental suspense films the moment he touched it with a collaboration of comic reliefs and anxiety attributes which have easily become well-loved by film spectators from all age brackets. HORROR:- Horror is a genre of storytelling intended to scare, shock, and thrill its audience. Horror can be interpreted in many different ways, but there is often a central villain, monster, or threat that is often a reflection of the fears being experienced by society at the time. This person or creature is called the “other,” a term that refers to someone that is feared because they are different or misunderstood. This is also why the horror genre has changed so much over the years. As culture and fears change, so does horror.  Themes: The horror genre is often a reflection of the culture and what it fears at the time (invasion, disease, nuclear testing, etc.).  Character Types: Besides the killer, monster, or threat, the various sub-genres contain certain hero archetypes (e.g., the Final Girl in Slasher movies).  Setting: Horror can have many settings, such as: a gothic castle, small town, outer space, or haunted house. It can take place in the past, present or future.  Music: This is an important facet in the horror genre. It can be used with great effect to build atmosphere and suspense. While the two genres are often confused, there is a clear difference between horror and thriller movies. Horror movie rules demand violence and a monster that appears early and relatively frequently. The climax revolves around a final fight or an escape from the monster. The "monster" in horror is typically "unnatural" or even "supernatural," whereas thrillers tend to rely on human threats. In a thriller, there is much more mystery and discovery. Tensions rise as the protagonist gets closer to discovering the evil threat. The climax revolves around a big reveal, such as the true intentions of the villain. The two genres can blend, of course, such as the modern horror/thriller Get Out (2017). Something like Halloween might also be considered a crossover since the killer is human but he exhibits supernatural abilities — like how he never seems to die when he's "killed." The 1930s was a tough period for America. They were in the midst of the Great Depression and Americans were feeling more desperate than ever before. Despite the economic turmoil, people spent what little they had on entertainment, like movies. One of the first great American horror films that garnered much popularity was Dracula (1931), based on the novel by Bram Stoker. And it set the standard for the Best Vampire Movies thereafter. Another film that was a reflection of the fears of the time was Frankenstein (1931), based on the novel by Mary Shelly. This movie created a more sympathetic monster; one that was fleeing from the oppression of his creator. The 70‟s were also known for the increase in news coverage on serial killer murders. Media outlets reported on these maniacs as if they were celebrities. People were afraid of the monster next door coming by and killing them in their homes. The '90s would also pave the way for a new sub-genre: found footage. The Blair Witch Project (1999) gave the audience the point-of- view of a camera, putting them in the shoes of the victims. This made the horror more personal for viewers, revitalizing the genre as a whole. There has been a sort of renaissance of horror movies in the last decade that has been quite excited to watch.
