LEWIS ELECTRON DOT STRUCTURE (L.E.D.S) CHEMISTRY 9 Lewis dot structures also called electron dot structures are diagrams that describe the chemical bonding between atoms in a molecule. They also display the total number of lone pairs present in each of the atoms that constitute the molecule. Learn how to draw Lewis Diagram for: Atoms and Simple molecules How many valence electrons does chlorine have? Lewis Diagram of Hydrogen Number of bonds 1 line = single bond = 2 electrons 2 line = double bond = 4 electrons 3 lines = triple bons = 6 electrons Example of molecule with a double bond is oxygen Notice that in this Lewis diagram both oxygen atoms have 8 valence electrons, 4 from the double bond and 4 from the lone pairs of electrons. By the way, 2 dots together are called lone pair of electrons. NITROGEN Some molecules contain triple bonds, which we write using 3 lines that represent the sharing of 6 electrons. Draw the Lewis diagram of a molecule 1. Count all the valence electrons Water (H2O) 2. Determine the center atom (the element there is only one of) H2 = 1 X 2 = 2 O= 6X1=6 3. Draw single bonds to the central atom Total = 8 v.e 4. Put all of the remaining valence electrons on atoms as lone pairs. 5. Turn lone pairs into double or triple bonds o give every atom an octet. Draw the Lewis diagram of a molecule 1. Count all the valence electrons Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 2. Determine the center atom (the element there is only one of) C =4 X 1 = 4 O = 6 X 2 = 12 3. Draw single bonds to the central atom Total = 16 v.e 4. Put all of the remaining valence electrons on atoms as lone pairs. 5. Turn lone pairs into double or triple bonds o give every atom an octet. Lewis diagram of SO3 S = 6 X 1 =6 O3 = 6 X 3 = 18 Total = 24v.e Exercises using show me board
