Lesson Objectives At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: a. Manifest understanding about architecture, its materials constructions and designs; b. Appreciate architectural designs of different eras by knowing its purposes and functions; and c. Create an exterior design of dream house applying the elements and considering the basic requirements of architectural design. Lesson Proper I. Discussion Architecture is the art of designing buildings or structures; the art and science of building. It is grouped into two: 1. Historic architecture 2. Contemporary architecture- refers to the current style of architecture. For example, a house built this year according to current trends would be considered contemporary architecture. Elements of Architecture 1. Lines 2. Colors 3. Light and Shadow 4. Value 5. Volume 6. Space 7. Form Basic Requirements in Architectural Design 1. Form follows function 2. Design must make sense 3. It must be interesting The Mediums of Architecture One decisive factor in architecture is the choice of materials. Each building material has certain physical properties that determine what can and what cannot be done with it. 1. Stone 2. Brick 3. Wood 4. Structural Steel 5. Reinforced Concrete The Construction Systems The quality of the material used in architecture defines the system to be employed, which may be any of the following: 1. Post-and lintel 2. Arch 3. Truss 4. Skeleton construction 5. Cantilever Architectural Styles and Designs Speaking of styles in architecture, the following designs are mostly popular and visible. 1.
