LITERATURE C O N T E M P O R A RY A R T F O R M S A N D P RAC TI C ES FROM THE REG I ONS The bond between the Philippines and the American still continues even after the declaration of independence in 1946 which is evident in the continual flourishment of modernism. HISTORICAL PERIOD In the field of poetry during the contemporary period, publication of young poets to campus journals emerged. The “Bagay” Movement also took the scene. It is a kind of poetry which uses colloquial language and is built on concrete images which tend to describe experiences. “BAGAY” MOVEMENT “The Bagay movement is aimed at this reconciliation between the poet and the world outside… This is the new material that Tinio brings into Tagalog poetry. The result is the invention of a new language, the renovation of the Tagalog poem itself.” POETS WHO STARTED BAGAY MOVEMENT Rolando Tinio Bienvinido Lumbera Jose F. Amado V. Hernandez introduced another form of poetry through his work “Ang Bayang Malaya”. HISTORICAL PERIOD It is a long narrative piece about a peasant leader. Oppresion and fighting for human rights are the main themes of the said piece. HISTORICAL PERIOD In the succeeding poems developed by Filipino poets, the influence of Amado V. Hernandez was evident. Social protest and social realism became the theme of the poems. HISTORICAL PERIOD The rise of nationalistic poetry discussing poverty, inequality, political turmoil, and other social problems started during the Marcos Era. HISTORICAL PERIOD During the contemporary period there are also short stories produced which use vernacular language. It was only the publication of Filipino literary works that continued due to the lack of moral and financial support, and due to the write’s choice of producing works using a language that can be understood by more readers. HISTORICAL PERIOD Short story writers produced more social conscious fiction during the 1970s. Short stories depicting the lives of the working class emerged. Social protest fiction was produced during the Marcos Era. HISTORICAL PERIOD In the area of essay and criticism literary criticism was produced after the World War II aiming to analyze the Philippine writings. Informal essay, on the other hand, also took the scene which was developed by women writers. The Contemporary Philippine Literature was a mixture of variety of subjects. It is also a product of different innovative techniques of writers LITERATURE FROM LUZON: BOB - ONG Bob Ong, or Roberto Ong, is the pseudonym of a Filipino contemporary author known for using conversational Filipino to create humorous and reflective depictions of life as a Filipino. LITERATURE FROM VISAYAS: EDILBERTO K. TIEMPO During his tenure at Siliman University, he was department chair (1950-1969), graduate school dean, vice-president for academic affairs, and writer-in- residence. Fiction-writer and literary critic Edilberto Tiempo reaped numerous honors for his writing. Most of his writings were published by New Day Publishers. These are To Be Free (1972), Finalities (1982), a prize winning novel, The Standard Bearer (1985), Rainbow for Rima (1988), Snake Twin and Other Stories (1992), and Farah (2001).. LITERATURE FROM MINDANAO: RICARDO DE UNGRIA Ricardo De Ungria graduated with a BA Literature, cum laude, degree from the De La Salle University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Washington University in St. Louis, United States in 1990 when he was awarded a Fulbright grant.
