Cell Modification Cell Modification is a process that occurs after cell division where the newly formed cells that are structurally modified so that they can perform their function efficiently and effectively. Cell Modification APICAL MODIFICATION LATERAL MODIFICATION BASAL MODIFICATION APICAL MODIFICATION found on the apical surface of the cell. Example: a. PSEUDOPODS b. CILIA AND FLAGELLA c. GAP JUNCTION GAP JUNCTION (communicating junction) - connect the cytoplasm of adjoining animal cells b. TIGHT JUNCTION acts as a barrier that regulates the movement of water and solutes between epithelial layers. It prevents leakage of ECM c. ADHERING JUNCTION ADHERING JUNCTION - anchors junction on the lateral surface of the cell. BASAL MODIFICATION a. DESMOSOMES/HEMIDESMOSOME - The anchoring junction of the basal surface of the cell. Primarily composed of keratin, integrins and cadherins.
