They are made up of only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Hydrocarbons There are different ways to represent hydrocarbons: Structural formula Molecular formula Molecular model Molecular Model We can use models to represent hydrocarbons. Each sphere represents an atom: Black = carbon Red = oxygen White = hydrogen Each stick represents one covalent bond. Molymod Rules You only use the molymods when I tell you to. You only build what I tell you to. You do not exchange materials (spheres or sticks) with any other boxes. You organize your box at the end to look just like it did at the start. Each carbon needs 4 bonds and each hydrogen needs 1 bond. Molecular Model Use the molymods to make a molecule with 1 carbon and 4 hydrogen atoms. Structural and Molecular Formula Write the structural and molecular formula for the molecule you made in your worksheet. Alkanes- only have single bonds between carbon atoms. Alkenes- have at least one double bond between carbon atoms. Alkynes- have at least one triple bond between carbon atoms. Naming Hydrocarbons The names of hydrocarbons are made up of 2 parts: a prefix and a suffix. The prefix tells us how many carbon atoms there are. The suffix tells us the type of hydrocarbon.
