PERSPECTIVE OF FREEDOM ST. THOMAS AQUINAS FREEDOM IS SPIRITUALITY AND LOVE Human beings have the power to make changes within themselves or could be on the things around them. He considers human as a moral agent. PERSPECTIVE OF FREEDOM (Summa Theologica) establishes the existence of God as first. ❑The power of change can be achieved through cooperation with GOD. ❑We have a conscience because of our spirituality. ST. THOMAS AQUINAS ARISTOTLE The purpose of human being is to be happy He believes about the highest AQUINAS form of happiness that can be found in God alone He also proposed Love rather than law in order to make transformation in humanity. ACTIVITY ARISTOTLE or AQUINAS? 1. The purpose of human beings is to be happy 2. He wisely and aptly chose and proposed Love rather than law to bring about the transformation of humanity. 3. The power of Volition. 4. Intellectual freedom. 5. We have a conscience because of our spirituality. PERSPECTIVE OF FREEDOM JEAN PAUL SARTRE (INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM) ❑ Existentialism ✔ It highlights the human existence as well as their freedom and choice ✔ Sartre’s Existentialism stems from this principle: “Existence precedes essences” PERSPECTIVE OF FREEDOM JEAN PAUL SARTRE (INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM) ✔ Human person builds the road to his/her destiny wherein she/he is the creator. ✔ Emphasizes the “Importance of free individual choice” ✔ Freedom is something that is exercised through our CHOICES PERSPECTIVE OF FREEDOM THOMAS HOBBES, JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU AND JOHN LOCKE (THEORY OF SOCIAL CONTRACT) ❑ They define freedom of individual in the context of having a government to rule them (contract) which is the basis of notion of moral obligation and duty. PERSPECTIVE OF FREEDOM THOMAS HOBBES, JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU AND JOHN LOCKE (THEORY OF SOCIAL CONTRACT) ❑Social Contract ✔ An agreement where individuals sacrifice an amount of their freedom and submit to a higher authority. The assigned group will show situation on choices have consequences by means of short skit using Comic strip 2.
