LESSON 1 Hardware, Software and IT Services DCIT 21 – INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING Contents o1. Introduction o2. Hardware Industry o3. Software Industry o4. IT Industry LESSON 1 – HARDWARE, SOFTWARE AND IT SERVICES 2 1. INTRODUCTION Introduction The technology industry, which places significant emphasis on development, provides many job opportunities. Companies across almost all industries aggressively seek digital transformation to maintain competitive in the market and meet client demands. Additionally, cloud computing tools and platforms have contributed to the increase of remote work. Computer Industry Computer industry encompasses those companies that manufacture computers and components. It is a fast growing industry producing high value services for its customers. It is also used more broadly to include software publishers and peripheral device manufacturers (e.g. Apple, Dell, Hewllet- Packard, IBM and Intel). 2. HARDWARE INDUSTRY Hardware Industry The hardware industry includes the design, manufacturing, and distribution of physical products and components that are used in a variety of applications, ranging from industrial machinery to consumer electronics. Several various industries, including electronics, automotive, aerospace, and construction, depends on this sector. Hardware Industry The computer industry can be classified into key components: Personal Computers (PCs) Components Servers and Data Centers Networking Devices Hardware Industry The hardware industry can be classified into different sectors, each with its own dynamics and advantages: Consumer Electronics Hardware Computer Hardware Semiconductors Automotive Hardware Industrial Hardware Networking Hardware Hardware Industry Consumer Electronics Hardware These are electronic devices typically used for leisure purposes or in homes, such as laptops, wearable devices, game consoles, mobile phones, and home appliances like washing machines and dishwashers. Products: Smartphones, laptops, tablets, wearable devices, and home appliances. Hardware Industry Computer Hardware A collective term used to describe any of the physical components of an analog or digital computer. 2 Main Category of Computer Hardware Internal Component External Component Input Component Output Component Products: Processors (CPUs), memory (RAM), storage devices (HDDs, SSDs), motheboards, power supplies, and peripherals. Hardware Industry Semiconductors Semiconductor is a material that conducts electricity more than an insulator but less than a pure conductor. The semiconductor industry is a hugely important sector in world economies, with semiconductor components found in a wide range of consumer and commercial products, from vehicles to computers to mobile devices and personal electronics. Products: Microchips, Integrated circuits, and transistors Hardware Industry Automotive Hardware refers to the design and implementation of safety measures in the hardware of vehicles to prevent accidents and protect occupants and other road users from harm. This include measures such as sensors and systems to detect and respond to potential hazard on the road. The goal of automotive hardware is to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries caused by hardware-related issues. Products: Sensors, batteries, and electric vehicle components. Hardware Industry Industrial Hardware The industrial hardware follows the same basic principles as consumer or commercial systems designs. The equipment in industrial hardware is used for manufacturing goods or participating in the process indirectly. Including but not limited to, measurement, monitoring, and control systems. Products: Machinery components, heavy- duty equipment, sensors, and control systems. Hardware Industry Networking Hardware Networking hardware is a set of physical or network devices that are essential for interaction and communication between hardware units operational on a computer network. Products: Routers, switches, modems, cables, and wireless access points. Hardware Industry Challenges Facing the Hardware Industry: Supply chain disruptions Environmental Regulations Innovations and Competition Cost Management 3. SOFTWARE INDUSTRY Software Industry Software is differentiated from hardware as the set of rules that allow computing services to be conducted on the physical device (the hardware). The software industry is only a small part of the overall computer programming activity that takes place in the technology industry sector. Software Industry The software industry can be separated into four main categories: Programming Services System Services Open Source SaaS Software Industry Programming Service The programming services sector has historically been the largest sector and includes names such as Microsoft Corporation (MSFT), Automatic Data Processing, Inc (ADP), Oracle Corporation (ORCL), and SDC Technologies, Inc. Software Industry System Services Although programming was the largest software sector early in computer history, system services grew rapidly through the 1960s and 1970s and then exploded in the 1980s with the rise of personal computers (PCs) and the need for an encompassing operating system such as Microsoft’s original disk operating system (DOS) that was launched in 1981. Software Industry Open Source Open source refers to a code base that was created and is free to acquire. However, most businesses require changes to be made to the code bases to suit their needs. Another open-source code base is the Android operating systems. Software Industry Software as a Service (SaaS) This software is kept on the creators’ servers and client access the software through the Internet, also referred to as the cloud. SaaS is a licensing model in which access to software is provided on a subscription basis. 4. IT INDUSTRY IT Industry Information Technology (IT) Industry is used to refer to the companies that develop, produce, sell, or support computers, software, and computer-related products. It includes companies in the computer industry, software publishers, communications service vendors such as AT&T, information services such as LexisNexis online law library, and service companies such as HP Enterprise Services. IT Industry Companies included in the IT Industry: Equipment Manufacturers Chipmakers Software Publishers IT Service Companies Computer Retailers dot-coms Company (?) Outsourcing and Offshoring Outsourcing is defined as the use of components or labor from outside suppliers. Offshoring is defined as relocating business processes, such as development and production, to lower-cost locations in other countries. Product Life Cycles Product Development Create product specifications and prototypes Product Life Cycles Product Announcement Publicize information about new product Product Life Cycles Introduction “Roll out” the product at a press conference Product Life Cycles Maintenance Adjust manufacturing capacity to meet product demand Product Life Cycles Retirement Discontinue manufacturing product and eventually discontinue product support Software Development Life Cycle Software Development Life Cycle The Planning Phase, also called as the feasibility stage, you should understand your product, target users’ needs, and customers’ demands. Software Development Life Cycle The Analysis Phase is a critical phase within the Software Development Life Cycle where the detailed requirements are gathered and analyzed to ensure clear understanding of the project’s scope and objectives. Software Development Life Cycle In the Design Phase, developers will design the user interface to ensure a seamless and user- friendly experience. Software Development Life Cycle The Implementation Phase bring your ideas to life. Software Development Life Cycle The Testing Phase defines a comprehensive testing strategy based on project requirements and goals. Software Development Life Cycle The Deployment Phase develop a detailed deployment plan that outlines the steps and timeline. Consider backup and rollback strategies in case of unexpected issues. Software Development Life Cycle The Maintenance Phase continuously monitor and track reported bugs and issues. Releases patch updates to address security vulnerabilities, bugs, and performance issues. Collect user feedback and maintain up-to- date documentation. THANK YOU!
