LISTENING TO PARAPHRASE INFORMATION Paraphrasing is a vital skill in speaking, writing, and everyday social situations. It is helpful in clarifying points made by the speaker and it also gives the impression that you are paying attention to what the speaker is talking about. LISTENING TO PARAPHRASE INFORMATION As a skill, paraphrasing is important because it checks your understanding of the material you listened to. It also trains your mental processes to understand the original information fully and combine it with your other prior knowledge. USE ABBREVIATIONS, SYMBOLS, AND EVEN PICTURES TO HELP YOU WRITE QUICKLY - You can also write little notes to yourself as reminders. Number ideas or underline or indent them to set things off. Taking notes 6. COPY WHAT THE TEACHER WRITES ON THE BLACKBOARD - If there is a diagram or chart, copy it slowly and carefully onto your notes, so you can review it later. Blackboard information tells you what your teacher thinks are important in the day’s work. Taking notes 7. COME TO CLASS ON TIME - The aim of the lesson, examination dates, assignments, and general announcements are usually given at the beginning of the lesson. TAKING NOTES It is writing down, marking or annotating for significant information from text listened to or read. The identified notes comprise about what to remember, study or learn. ACTIVITY EXERCISE IN PAGE 144 Lao Tzu was an older contemporary of Confucius. He left his job as a record keeper in the court of Zhou Dynasty to live as a hermit. The legend says that Lao Tzu compiled his wisdom, and this book became the Tao Te Ching—the sacred text of Daoism. Daoism is one of the old Eastern philosophies still popular today. Daoism believes that even though the world is composed of opposites and contrasts, it is guided in harmony by the dao (the path to virtue and happiness). Daoism emphasizes meditation and immersion to nature. Lao Tzu teaches wu wei (flow/effortless action). This simply means going with the “flow,” accepting the way of the dao, and let go of worries and complex thought. Lao Tzu says, “To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.” Every season and transformation in nature happens in their own time. There is no use to rush or force things. One must be patient and open. Daoism also teaches being in touch with one’s true self. To do this, one must be immersed in nature. Lao Tzu compares different things in nature to virtues like the beauty of the flower and the strength of the mountain. In today’s modern world that is teeming with distraction and noise, the teachings of Lao Tzu remind us of simplicity and openness. Maybe, we would be able to discover and recover our true selves.
