Pathology of the Cardiovascular System Prof Dr Manal Elmasry MD Astherosclerosis of Aorta Astherosclerosis of Aorta Astherosclerosis Anginal Pain A type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. Angina is a symptom of coronary artery disease. Myocardial Infarction (MI) If blood flow in one of the coronary artery branches to part of the cardiac muscle has been completely cut off, this will lead to cardiac ischemia. If myocardial ischemia is left untreated as an emergency, it will lead to Myocardial Infarction (MI). Approximately 60% of MI occur within 4 hours, and 80% occur within 12 hours. The earlier the treatment (less than 6 hours from symptom onset). Normal Heart Muscle Normal Heart Tissue Normal Heart Tissue Astherosclerosis and Ischemic Heart Disease Acute Myocardial Infarction Atherosclerotic calcification of the aorta Embolus (Emboli) Thrombus Showers of emboli Embolus (Narrow blood vessels) Ischemia (Brain) Stroke Paralysis (Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Quadriplegia) Aschoff Bodies Interstitial Myocardial Granules in: Rheumatic Fever Rheumatic heart disease I Rheumatic heart disease is heart valve damage resulting from rheumatic fever. Bacterial infections called group A streptococcal A infections can cause rheumatic fever.. Pathogenesis: - An infection, such as strep throat, triggers your body’s immune response. It causes inflammation throughout the body, including in the heart. If untreated, the inflammation can lead to permanent heart damage. Rheumatic heart disease II - Aschoff’s nodule (pathologic lesion of Rheumatic heart disease): Chronic inflammatory cellular aggregates nodules Found in the cardiac muscles of patients with rheumatic fever.
